How to overlap an image onto another.

I'm sorry.

This is probably the most commonly asked question and people must be sick of answering it, but how do you combine two images together? Say for example I crop some guy's face and have an irregular shape, but the shape, when selected, is selected as a rectangle and the cut bits have been replaced by white.

When I try to add the object to another picture the white pieces forming the rectange remain, so it looks like there's this massive white rectange surrounding this guy's new head.

How do I fix this?

well if you are saving the picture after you cut out the guys head make sure you save it as a png because it supports transparency. also you have to put the cut out part on a new layer above the picture you want to put it on.
