Least Painful Transparency Method Help requested

Let's say I have a face on a white background... I can select the white background around the face and hit delete. Save as Png format. Open a new image to use as a background then pull in the face.png file and the edge looks horrible.

What do you do to clean up the edge or is there a better way to not have such a jagged image?

Try putting the face on a seperate layer and then using the Feather plugin.

EDIT: Also, next time, try using alpha masking. Here's a tutorial about it.
