Black & white background with a color picture

Hello, I'm a newbie! I'm trying to redo a picture by keeping the person in color and changing the background to black & white. When I try to do this with the magic wand, it"s hard to keep the area in color. Is there a better way to this. I've seen a lot of picture like this. I think is cool
