Yes please please please upgrade to Windows 7. I am looking forward to the day I can change this line of code,

if (!OS.IsXPOrLater) { Error("Windows XP or newer is required"); }

to this one,

if (!OS.IsVistaOrLater) { Error("Windows Vista or newer is required"); }

There are so many new things in Vista and 7 that I just can't use until XP support is dropped. I can't responsibly do that until XP is a dwindling percentage of the user base.

Hey, Rick. How do you find out the operating systems of the people who download PdN? Just curious.

Paint.NET checks for updates based on the OS it's running on and what the locale is. Rick can keep track of which update manifests are requested how many times.

An update manifest is just a simple text file containing the latest version number and the URL to download it. So a copy of Paint.NET running on US English Windows 7 might request the manifest as http://getpaint.net/updatemanifests/windows-7-en-US.txt.

@DarkShock:

Standard disclaimer: As a reminder, these statistics represent hits to the auto-updater manifests, which means they approximately reveal the Paint.NET application’s usage (as opposed to the number of installed copies). Unless the auto-updater is disabled, it will check for updates up to once every 5 days at application startup. This is done by downloading a text file whose filename is decorated with OS and language information. Having 2.7 million hits to the manifests does not mean that Paint.NET has 2.7 million installations, or 2.7 million active users. It is merely a tool for comparing usage trends amongst different time periods (month to month, in this case).

Edit: Beaten

If you're upgrading from XP to 7, you won't be disappointed.

Well, I mean, it'll take awhile to get everything installed and setup. But after that, it's full of win.

I just found out i'm able to get it for free, just that I paid 12 bucks for the shipping. So, now i sit and wait. I'm interested too.

That's odd. I didn't have to pay a thing. Not like I'm complaining though. :D

Also: When I replace Windows Vista with Windows 7 will I lose or gain space on my hardrive?

Nevermind. I went to Microsoft's site and it said Windows Vista requires 40GB and 7 requires 20GB (64-bit). So I will gain 20gigs?

ok really quick, i just recently took my windows 7 off my laptop, and re-installed the windows xp (home edition) laptop came with, but i am going to re-partition the drive which is 100gig so i have 40 and 40 with a 20 gig recovery. but i found out that windows 7 and any os can be used, but the trick is that the eldiest os has to be added first, so i'm going to run both xp he, and windows 7, by the way windows 7 is good, i would grab the ultimate upgrade if you can, best for self setup. and the setup is only 25 minutes for windows 7.... waaa ha ha ha waa hahah

Not necessarily. Those are rough estimates and include room for other things as well, i.e. MS wouldn't say 7 requires a 20GB HD if it took the whole 20 leaving no room for anything else. Also, upgrades tend to have cruft. You'd gain a lot more room by doing a clean install, not just because of the smaller footprint of the OS but also any bloody potato you've built up from day-to-day usage.

Gotcha. :wink:

Hopefully I can gain a couple gigs.

Now you know exactly how web developers felt for the longest time about Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. :P

At least, as far as I've seen, IE6 won't even run on Vista or later, without some weird virtual machine trickery...

Please, everyone, for the love of all that is holy, upgrade to Windows 7. :wink:

That's an excellent reason to stop checking my pages for IE6 compatibility...:-P

Besides, knowing the difficulty I have to go through to get IE6 downloaded at all (and who'd WANT to go through that, unless they needed it for work), nobody buying a new machine (that is, nobody buying a new machine who was running IE6 on their old one) would be able to find it.

So, here's what we do. Take advantage of IE6's security holes, and create a virus that wipes clean Internet Explorer on all units running IE6. Then it flashes up a message saying "You just lost all internet privileges due to being an IE6 user. Click below for a real browser." FTP link to Firefox, and we're golden; the decent users will download it, the grandmas who don't know what's going on will assume their computer is broken and buy a new one. Win-win7. :-)

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

Honestly I think the majority of people don't care about their Operating Systems. With the economy the way it is most people will stick with a computer that just works. They really don't want to dish out money for a new OS when their current one works... :|
