An integrated shoutbox

Recommended Posts

Since the "ONLY ONE?" thread, I've been wondering if there's a way we can have a shoutbox integrated with phpBB. Simon's GS script was nice, but not enough people used it. The dA chat isn't active (AFAIK?), because it's not actually in the same place as the forum.

This seems to be a good solution. I think it would be great to be able to chat with other members. It would be great to notify other users that a new plugin/PDN version/tutorial is out, link to the Pictorium for some CC, ask for quick help instead of making a thrad in GD&Q, or simply have fun with other members, which I'm sure everyone wants to do considering over a third of the total posts on this board are in the Alfredo.

I'm not sure whether the modification allows toggling the SB on and off per user, so if this is put in place, I'd suggest making a duplicate of the skins, one with and one without the shoutbox, just in case some antisocial hermits want to live in peace. ;)

Oh, my bad. You know, maybe moving the forum to http://forum.getpaint.net/ or http://getpaint.net/forum would be a good choice... Not sure if the admins have access the the database(s) though. If they do, isn't it possible to back up everything, install phpbb3, and use the database backup to create a copy of the forum, where no one would have to register again since all the tables are still there? Then the forum wouldn't be down so often (>_>) and mods would be a possibility.

COUGH COUGH

EDIT: Also, why not just make a link in the navbar to a chatroom/shoutbox that's EXTERNAL.

Or

How to add a shoutbox without installing mods.

1. Choose a chat script/site that can be embedded in HTML, create a new room and copy the code, or embed the PDN chatroll room.

2. Use the code from step 1 to create a new BBCode and give the tag a long name to prevent it being embedded in posts and sigs.

3. Create a new "link" forum in the "off-topic" category that links back to the index page or the chatroom page and use the new BBCode tag in its description.

There's already a PdN chatroom, on dA.

We can install pretty much nothing here.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

I think a shoutbox that uses the existing usernames and other data is better. I wouldn't want to register again to use the shoutbox, and there's always the problem of impersonation (not very likely though).

Was that directed at me?

If it was, on the site I provided you don't need to register just enter a name.
