What computer/monitor/OS do you use?

Recommended Posts

I need a new computer, and would like it to be mostly for art and coding, so which combo would be the best? Currently, I just have a HP dv9500 laptop, which is actually really nice...but I was thinking a desktop, so yeah. What do you use, and what would you suggest?

If its for mainly art and coding then i suggest an iMac, that is, if you're willing the pay the costly price.

If not, then i dunno about the computer and monitor, but i highly suggest Windows 7. It does a lot of things quicker than XP and Vista, and it looks cool. :)

Merry Christmas

Will you use it for Gaming?

Which art programs will you use and what resolution of image?

Coding what and in which language (I presume C#)?

Yes. Mostly just CoD4, WoW, and The Sims 3 though.

Adobe Photoshop CS4, Adobe Lightroom, and C4D...The pictures won't be tooooooo large-format, at most about 5000px x 3000px.

Yeah, C#, and I'm getting into Perl too...

None of those games require more than 2GB (and similar specs), although they and other programs might in future and you might as well stay stay ahead. I can guess how much space it takes to store a 5000 x 3000px image in memory, but that fails to take into account layers and i'm guessing Photoshop has some kind of caching to solve this problem.

Providing you're not writing games in c# or making extensive use of WPF I doubt it requires an extensive system (although I haven't measured this, it works fine on a 4GB 32bit system).

i recommend you building a computer, or getting someone else to build it 9 a shop) or buy a already-custom-built computer off the internet.

buy windows vista for now, and pay 10$ so you can upgrade to windows 7.
