david.atwell
Just took down "For the Record." (ModWar2) Wow, that was an AWESOME game. Cinematic without feeling like I was just watching. Frontcannon
Pure men's entertainment, though I think they've overdone it sometimes.. I mean, the space scene... What the heck? david.atwell
The space scene was, like, ten seconds to show you what was happening. I thought it was cool, added to the ambience. david.atwell
Now, THAT is a conversation that happened in another thread already. :-P Sounds like you have a bit of a chip on your shoulder about that game... Frontcannon
Yeah I do. Infinity Ward gave, with this mission, wonderful fodder to every violence-in-videogames critic in the world. It has thrown the community a whole lot back, years of opening the public to this kind of videogames are.. just worthless. If we justifiy killing in videogames with the story etc, they just need to point to that mission. And that just sucks. (that's the situation in Germany, I don't know how it's in the US or somewhere else, you may have a different culture of dealing with violence) Quote Night Vision Text Effect Tutorial Gallery reddit.com/r/futurebeats | My Mixcloud
Sozo
You know, in Gears of War 2, in the main base you can catch a glimpse of an arcade machine called "Murder Simulator," a reference to Jack Thompson's overblown arguing that video games are murder simulators for teenagers. I think (from what I've read and seen, I haven't played MW2... yet) that the airport scene does put a few more shells in Jack's shotgun. DarkShock
Is Jack Thompson really still fighting against violence in video games? Really? Quote ---- Gallery | Sig Tutorial | deviantART | Sig Videos | PhotoBucket ----D E S T I N Y
david.atwell
"No Russian" serves to get you into the game quite well. In addition, the plot of the rest of the game doesn't make sense without the actions of the protagonist in "No Russian." You don't have to shoot the civilians. In fact, you're less penalized for not shooting civilians than you would be in, for instance, Grand Theft Auto. And in some localized versions, you lose if you do shoot them. So clearly it's not the point to be killing civilians. The point is that war is ugly. And that point is made quite well. Jack Thompson is a straw man. Nothing more. He has no purpose commenting on video games. Quote The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. Briamoth
I actually liked that level. I mean it was fn to finally shoot people without them shooting you back. This is off topic but still on the topic of mw2. How many people do you end up playing as? I was just wondering.
david.atwell
Well, okay, you didn't get the point of that level. It wasn't SUPPOSED to be fun. :-P As far as how many people you play as...Soap and Roach are the big ones. You start as Allen, though (Afghan and Russia), and you play as Ramirez to liberate the suburbs...plus, there's that twenty seconds as an astronaut. So, five. Frontcannon
If a level isn't supposed to be fun, then why bother implementing it into a game? That completely defies the logic behind games. Games are entertainment software. They are supposed to be fun. The story argument doesn't really count, Modern Warfare 2 had some nice cinematic moments, but the story wasn't more then some loosely-knotted net to tie the missions together. What this mission is supposed to have to do with war is another mystery to me. It's a terroristic act. If I want to know how ugly war is, I'm going to read a news magazine, not play a first-person-shooter. I really look forward to Bad Company 2 though. It seems to be fun. 007 Nab
Games are entertainment software. They are supposed to be fun. Eh, why? Who says? Books aren't fun. I wouldn't say most films are either -- and yet they're both great sources of entertainment. See my logic here? Now, I haven't even played MW2, so I wouldn't know the particular mission you guys are talking about -- but if a game is used as a storytelling device, such as in books or movies, who says it needs to be necessarily be fun? I think game developers are tying to make games more than what they have been in the past -- they are increasingly opening up, giving you more options - becoming more like life, essentially. I dunno, that's just my thoughts for now Quote "pyrochild, you're my favorite person ever. We should go snowboarding some time."~ 007 Nab. Ish. PDN Gallery | I Made a Deviant Art! Frontcannon
Well, something being fun means you enjoy it, or doesn't it? You enjoy books. You enjoy films. You enjoy games. There may be a more accurate expression, but I'm not a native speaker. Books aren't fun. I clearly have to disagree with that. cazaron
entertainment can be interesting, rather than fun. a lot of books (im not going to label all of them) are interesting, not fun. just because something is entertaining doesnt make it fun. i find reading the 3 kingdoms era of history entertaining, but by god it isnt fun... it interests me, but i dont find it... fun. thats my opinion anyway. 007 Nab
Yes, Frontcannon - I think it's just an issue of semantics -- my definition of fun, when comparing the term to 'entertaining' or 'enjoyable' is its literal definition - such as going down a roller coaster. I consider riding in a roller coaster physically 'fun'. Unfortunately 'fun' is a very basic adjective, I'd say - it has very many meanings. So maybe you meant 'entertaining' or 'captivating' or something else by your usage of it, which I took literally. Quote "pyrochild, you're my favorite person ever. DarkShock
Project Natal was confirmed for a Winter 2010 release. david.atwell
Entertainment doesn't have to be fun to tell a compelling story. I present for your consideration "The Dark Knight." One of the most compelling stories in recent memory, but absolutely no fun whatsoever. Games have evolved beyond the point where they have to simply be fun. As evidenced by the fact that games are now adding in opening and closing credits sequences, complete with theme music and memorable scenes from the storyline, games are becoming more and more cinematic in nature. They're truly a storytelling medium now; but if you just want your games to be fun all the time, and never challenge you with a more advanced storyline, I'd advise you to go back to Bejeweled. But we've moved past a gaming industry that need not challenge us. The video game industry is every bit as mature as the television and film industry now, and it not only deserves but demands stories that challenge our mind as much as their gameplay challenges our skills. Modern Warfare 2 is an excellent part of that trend. Quote The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it.
