Video Gaming Thread

Recommended Posts

Ok, for all intensive purposes, this is a generic video gaming thread. Talk about any video game related stuff here. For the sake of anyone who wants to know the origins of the thread, I've hidden the original text below.

Hey folks,

Quite lately I've fallen into a bit of a dilemma. Now that summer is here, I've just recently gotten into the mood to play some video games and looked at my game repertoire. And it's extremely small. And I mean it's basically nonexistent. I have a Nintendo Wii that I got only a few months ago, and have some common Mario games and Brawl... and that's it.

Yeah. In matter of fact, I think my view on video games is seriously outdated, and now with some free time I want to delve more into the realm of video games. I'd really like to try getting into the realm of FPS and Music Video games. However, I do realize that I should probably buy a new console as well.

Getting to the point: Should I buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360? And which is better, Guitar Hero or Rock Band? I know I'm probably going to get the standard "Preference is subjective, depending to the gamer". I know that the idea of "better" is subjective, but I'd like to know how it is subjective (if that's not an already confusing sentence.. Just ignore that request if it's confusing. I tried to word it as best I can..)

Any recommendations on video games to buy on any console is welcome too :)

(In fact, I wouldn't mind if this became a video game thread after I sort out this dilemma. I wouldn't mind... unless there was one I didn't see in search..)

ps3s are by far, better, IMO.

GH is better than RB IMO as well.

i primarily play sport games, and the ps3 is great for that, FPS isn't my genre, so i dont know much on that side of things, but ive heard that COD4 etc. are very nice shooter games for the ps3.

most xbox fans say xbox is better, we have halo, and i think halo sucks. but, that is your choice.

id go with the ps3, i have one, and i can tell you, it is the best console by far.

You should get the Win7 theme for XP. Then get the rest of Win7. Then uninstall XP. Then it'll really look nice. ~ David Atwell

Alright, just in case CMD lurks this thread I'll refrain from my fanboyism

If you want the latest games, and the widest variety, I am going to honestly suggest the Xbox 360. Yes, on paper the Playstation 3 is superior however the 360 does, regardless of all comments, have a stronger online service. As well many PS3 exclusives are 'jumping ship', if you would. As such, you will get the best gaming selection, the best online service, and maybe with Natal the best gameplay experience.

Really, if you want to get into the FPS and music game scene, you are going to want the 360. Namely because every strong FPS is currently on the 360 with larger online support, and the DLC seems to flow towards the 360 quicker than the PS3 when it comes to music games.

When it comes to Rock Band vs Guitar Hero, I am sorry but gamer preference exists here. The style of gameplay is actually a lot different. In Guitar Hero expect more emphasis on self performance and guitar based songs, as well as a lot more online competition. In Rock Band be prepared for more of a friend styled experience, with a lot of focus on the overall rating of the players playing the instruments. DLC is going to be stronger for Rock Band, because they have MTV backing them up. As well, The Beatles: Rock Band is going to be better than switching my Caps Lock key to Backspace.

Xbox 360 > PS3 in your case, and probably Rock Band > Guitar Hero in your case.

IMO it wont make much difference in which console you buy, there both good consoles with some minor flaws.

360: Theres the advantage of a winder range of games, its a cheaper console and the fact that only play is busier and in some cases better.

The main cons for the 360 are me personally are, theres a distinct lack of Little Big Planet and Resistance ;) There well known for breaking ( although my ps3 did break once >< ) and that pesky xbox live taking $40 out your pocket each month

Ps3: obviously i can pretty much state the opposite to what i just said about the xbox apart from the whole breaking thing, they break a lot, just not as regulary.

Game wise i spend most my time on LittleBigPlanet Cod4 and Burnout Paradise, as all 3 of them are awsome :P Also cod5 might be worth getting if you wanna pay like £10 every couple of month for the new zombie maps.

Well thats my opinion sorry if its abit lopsided but i am a ps3 owner :P

I think both consoles are good in their own way. They both have certain advantages and disadvantages. Btw this will be a long post :D

The PS3 has Blu-Ray, free online gaming, built-in Wi-Fi, an internet browser, and a lot of other compatability.

The main flaw I can think of is that the 60Gb models might break in 2 years because of YLOD ( mine did, I got a new one for free).

The Xbox 360 has better online gaming and more exclusive games and exclusive add-on content, Project Natal*.

The flaws are RRoD which I believe happens more frequently than YLOD, no built-in Wi-Fi and you have to pay for online gaming.

I looked up Wikipedia's list of PS3 exclusives and Xbox 360 exclusives. According to them there are 158 PS3 exclusive games and 172 X360 exclusives.

But if you will buy a console primarily for the games I would still have to say PS3. The 360 may have more games right now but it has also been out for a whole year longer than the PS3 and yet there is only a 14 game difference. Many game journalists have said that they believe 2009 will be Sony's year and after watching this years E3 I believe them. The PS3 is getting more and more exclusives and is even jumping on the motion control bandwagon. PS3 games now get more DLC than before and it won't be long until they start paying for exclusive content like Microsoft has been doing for some time.

If you want a lot of connectivity would recommend the 60GB model PS3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3#Models

The best advice I can give you is to try both consoled, take a look at the games in the Wikipedia articles I linked to and decide which games you are most interested in.

_____

For a very biased list of wortwhile exclusives for both consolesclick here (I did not make that list.)

*There are probably more pros for the 360 but I couldn't remember them. If you know any please PM me or post below and I will gladly edit my post.

Ok, yes Little Big Planet and Resistance are losses to the 360 platform. In fact, I am dying to own a PS3 just for Little Big Planet. However, when it comes down to Resistance I am going to go ahead and say Gears of War. Resistance isn't a bad game, but the online experience doesn't offer much more of an experience than you could get out of, say, CoD4 or Gears of War.

As for the Xbox 360 RRoD issue, if he were to go to the store and buy a new Xbox 360, then I could almost guarantee that he would never suffer from the RRoD. Smaller chipsets, new disc drives, and larger fans make the new 360's sound proof. I am not kidding, either.

If Xbox Live took 40$ out of my pocket every month than I would not pay for it. However, I pay 50$ a year for the service, or 20$ every three months, or 8$ every month. Many gamers who don't own a 360 have this misconception that Xbox Live is horribly over priced, and that an Xbox Live truck comes to my house every week and takes my first born son away from me until I pay for it. That is simply not true! Payments are extremely easy, and for many is a once a year thing. As well, if you ever need to stop paying it is also very easy to downgrade your account to Silver and not have to pay for a while.

I looked up Wikipedia's list of PS3 exclusives and Xbox 360 exclusives. According to them there are 158 PS3 exclusive games and 172 X360 exclusives.

I am sorry, but numbers really don't mean anything. Look at the list of exclusives, as I just did. I would say that of each list, there are numerous unplayed titles exclusive to each individual console's online service. However, the Playstation 3 has a lot more of these unplayed titles, and many of them are flat out terrible. As well, on these exclusive lists there are more unreleased Playstation 3 exclusive titles than Xbox 360 titles.

Seriously, listen to what Worldnewser wants. He wants the best first person shooters. Breaking down exclusive First Person Shooters between the two consoles, Playsation 3 has Resistance while the Xbox 360 has Halo and Gears of War. Some might consider that a close call, so look at the DLC and the amount of online players between the titles. Xbox 360's exclusive FPS definitely outweigh the PS3's, because Xbox Live attracts that kind of game development.

Next, he wants music games, namely Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Both are available on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but which one has more DLC? While DLC might not matter too much to the FPS, it is a very important factor when it comes to music games. Most Rock Band DLC still faces a one week delay before hitting the PSN, and that doesn't even account for some of the missing Guitar Hero DLC.

This isn't a console war, but providing the best console to fit Worldnewser's expectations of a console. Yes, PS3 does plenty of things better than the Xbox 360, but if I am reading Worldnewser's post correctly those things will become irrelevant to him down the course of his console's lifetime.

Thanks for the feedback guys :)

I'm still reflecting on the ideas I have as well as suggestions i this post. In response to the previous post before me, Wi-Fi, Internet Browser and Blu-Ray aren't that crucial to me (ok maybe the wi-fi just a bit). Howev

As for game genres, I'm not constricting the conversation to just FPS and music games. Those were just the first two genres that came to mind (=Guitar Hero/Rock Band, and CoD/Halo/GoW respectively) As I said before, my gaming experience is outdated. Just putting it out there...

Edit: Wow..had to remove a chunk of arguments after seeing that Mike responded. Most of my arguments are settled :)
