This tutorial is available as a PDF. Click here to view or download it

Final Product will look something like this (but i spent quite a bit of time on this one, so perhaps not as good)

3632583361_f76f228df8_o.png

Plugins needed

Gradient Bars--found at viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21706

Smudge--also found at viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21706

Stock image of Earth-- found at http://www.earthshope.org/Home_files/ea ... parent.png

1) Create a new image (800px X 600px), and fill canvas with black

2) Create a new layer, title it ring

3) Use gradient bars with a primary color 808080 and secondary color FFFFFF (alpha 0) with settings: alignment=.02,scale=.34

3632472063_f41c85de16.jpg

4) Use Polar Inversion with default settings

5) Select the lower half of the bottom most ring, invert selection, and delete

3632472993_bf7a075eb1.jpg

6) Select the bottom half again, move to center of screen, copy it to the clipboard

7) Create a new layer (ring 2) and paste the selection

😎 Flip the layer vertically and align the two ring halves, merge the two layers

3632474003_503a5bdc9e.jpg

9) Duplicate the layer and fill the ring with 00FFFF

3633286858_e353d85f35.jpg

10) Select the inside of the ring and delete, merge both ring layers

3633287876_6e2220e052.jpg

11) use smudge to roughen the outside edge of the ring (size 30 brush, spraypaint brush, strength-25)

3633288754_6c3a2e9581.jpg

12) Use rotate/zoom to turn the ring into an angled elipse with settings as so: twist angle=109, twist angle=80, pan to center of screen, zoom=3.07

3633300202_28c1ac3f36.jpg

13) Add a new layer and title it earth, add copied image of earth

14) Use magic wand (40 strength) to delete the black around the image, leaving just the earth

3633289652_e292782dba.jpg

15) adust earth to a size you feel is apropriate, and rotate to be on axis of ring as so:

3633290492_4f267f4563.jpg

16) use the eraser to COMPLETELY delete what is underneath the axis of the ring as so:

3633291420_d9367e1d69.jpg

17) use the paintbrush (brush size 5 with color red) to carve the earth into a puzzle:

3632480369_279ea61042.jpg

18) magic wand the puzzle border and delete

3632481193_945fcf3f8d.jpg

19) use the lasso select to select one of the peices and drag it away from the center of the earth

3632481845_bbeb4e9761.jpg

20) repeat step 19 with one or two other pieces

3632482503_9f83ef35d8.jpg

21) use the paint brush (size five, primary 7F3300 and secondary 7C6454) and create the crust under the moved pieces as so:

3633296492_6585ae41f9.jpg

22) repeat on the other moved pieces

3632485469_d02c133587.jpg

23) also do this the the remaining, unmoved crust

24) fill in the puzzle connectors with the brown (brush size 5) and outline it with black(brush size 2)

3633297852_27fb4cfeca.jpg

25) use smudge ( paintbrush size ten on the crust of the pieces) in the method shown:

3632489535_b98a076629.jpg

26) repeat on all visible crust

3632486923_cdf3ea6338.jpg

27) duplicate the layer, and move it under the ring layer

28) select the earth and rotate it 180 degrees so it is a mirror of the top earth

3633299276_18d662b07b.jpg

29) create a new layer above the background layer and draw a filled light blue circle in the middle of the earth

30) zoom blur this layer (strenght 100 from the center of the light blue circle) 5 times

3632490581_eb974147a2.jpg

additional steps

1) create a new layer on the very top

2) fill in all exploding gaps with a light orange

3633302984_af01069413.jpg

3) zoom blur this layer (100 strength) twice

4) set the new layers blending to glow

Final

Amazing tutorial! I got to the step where I needed to draw in the crust, and I was like 'jeez, I am way too tired and lazy to do this,' so I kinda stopped. However, I love the outcomes that I have seen! A lot of hard work was put into this and I am impressed!

Nice tutorial! This is probably the most complex I've seen in a while.

A few suggestions:

1. As Tendercrisp said here...

Feather has to be the single most useful and versatile effect in the history of PDN.
Use feather on the picture of the earth. The pixelated edges there really gave me a bad impression of the tutorial when I first looked (but, after I read the whole thing, I was like  )

2. Lower the saturation of the explosion. I would never expect to see colors as bright as those anywhere short of an animated film by Disney.

3. Instead of using "rotate/zoom" to rotate the ring, try "shape 3D." Shape 3D has an anti-alias feature that takes away the pixelated effect.

4. To give the ring less of a "paper-thin" look, draw an outline around the outside edge with a very similar color (on a new layer), add black and white noise, use median, and smudge it. You should end up with a sort of 3D ring around the edge if you do it right. That should cover the sharp edge the rotation made.

Note: all comments based on first image

That list ended up being longer than I wanted :? I hope I didn't offend anybody. As I said...I'm very impressed with this tut. Great work!

EDIT: NOOO!!! Smudge doesn't work with pdn 3.5 yet :( I'll have to finish my attempt later

Great tutorial roguert4u! I didn't like the effect adding the earth gave to the explosion on my image (that's just me - on yours I loved it haha) so I sorta deviated from the instructions and made an exploding star.

WHOA!:D:D:D Nice tut! Though one thing: could you make the #FFFFFF color thingy a bit clearer? other than that, very good! :pizza::mtdew::cookie::coffee: <--Enjoy! :bmw:-?<- Car keys to a new car for you

Also, I may try to make my own one of these...
