Lots of spam lately

Recommended Posts

Here's a better (IMHO) solution:

Change the default group to a new one like I said last time, but instead of requiring approval deny them permission to post BBCode:

Users can only link to images violating rule 12, also making it harder to post links. Legitimate users needing help can simply link to images.

Sozo: By that, do you mean the sorts of conversations me and a few others had in the offtopic when Jonerongo hit?

Nope. I'm referring to responding to the spammers posts themselves, which only serves to encourage them. That's why I'm glad nobody is doing it.

I never heared CS talking about a whitelist. :?

I didn't.

So, if I understand you, new users could still post, but not put in images or links. Correct? If so, sounds like a good idea to me.

I'd say this is a good idea. Maybe after they past about 50 posts, they could then be automatically notified that they can now use BBcode.

I don't think that's possible, without a certain mod at least - but I guess admins could change their groups given how few regulars we get. As i've said - users looking for one-off answers could just post links. ;)

Yeah, I think that may be the best way to minimize the damage of spammers. It's up to the mods though, and ultimately Rick.

Hell, another option would be to simply allow anyone to join the group that allows them to post BBCode. It may sound naive, but I have a hard time believing that a spammer, let alone a spam bot, would bother. Especially if people were told about it in the rules. :P

Just my 20 pence.

That would be a nice ironic twist, putting that information in the rules... very devious Simon.

WOAH! I had no idea we'd FP'd Forumer's site. That's definitely where most, if not all, of the spam is coming from.

EDIT: And since it's basically Forumer's fault for all the spam, they should have no argument when someone requests Akismet be installed. :D

Not only are we their biggest forum, we have nearly 10,000 more users than #2. That's right - we have almost three times as many users than they do.

So it's in their best interest to make us happy. :-)

Rick approved the idea, and I've posted the following in the Forumer HQ forum:

As for your suggestions: I'd prefer to not attack the symptoms, but the problems themselves. I think that Akismet would help significantly in that regard. Blocking images won't do much, since most spammers don't use images anyway. And blocking links would present a significant wall to legitimate users.

Any kind of whitelist makes our forum harder for people who need help, and that's not what we want to do.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

I see. I was basing my suggestion on the presumption that the final straw was the pornography spam.

Except that if someone is looking for somewhere to spam, they are more likely to find what they're looking for at Forumer. Although I guess that's not necessary since they can just use a search engine.

It's mostly links to what I assume are pornographic pages. The anchor text is pornographic in nature, at least.

I was agreeing with you. :-) I was noting how much of a target we are.

As a new (ish) member, I wouldn't find it terribly restrictive to limit my abilities to post code or images to the board... even if the limit were initially set above my current post count.

It might even stop a few of those idiotic tutorials.

When computers become self-aware and take over the world, the porn bots will get much, MUCH worse.

If we need to resort to that, I think we'll make it impossible for new users to create new threads. In the meantime, we'll allow them to reply to threads, and create some like "Plugin Requests," "Feature Requests," or "Basic Troubleshooting" where people can post thread ideas that we can then spin off into their own threads.

That's 100% my stream-of-consciousness. I don't have any official backing for that.
