What if Google or Mozilla made an OS?

Recommended Posts

This topic will either thrive, or it may just find itself lost in the Alfredo. :)

So...

What if Google did make a proper OS? <-- you can still discuss this if you want.

What if Mozilla made a proper OS? (Not SeaMonkey, but a proper one)

Discuss or debate.. w/e :)

I'm sure the latter of the two will be talked about more.

Personally, I think they would be able to compete with MS and Apple, a year or so after release.

They've made two, so why ask 'what if' if it already has?

Goobuntu (Wiki this)

Android (Operating System) (Wiki this)

Granted, some think 'Hey, Android is for mobile devices!', but if that was the case then there wouldn't be reasearch and projects aimed at porting the OS to netbooks. And Goobuntu, while not publically released, should be considered a full fledged Google created distro.

Simon makes a good point, there'd be way to much advertising.

I don't use their browser, and I wouldn't use their OS.

I'm sticking with XP.

How about changing the title to "What if Google made another OS?"

Well, I dunno, I would probably use it if it'd look good and have some useful features.

If I were Google i'd focus on taking over the desktop applications market using web-integration to ensure it would be hard for competitors to beat it. I would then use that power to promote a new OS in which the apps were more tightly integrated to ensure users have the confidence in usability and compatibility to use it.

Give him a break, he obviously didn't know.. you're the 3rd person or w/e to tell him.

Ok, i forgot about Android, and any other Google OS like thingys i didn't know of, so of course, i thought it would be a good idea. Sorry if i had "annoyed" a few people by making this topic, but i believe this topic will still be interesting.

Personally, i don't think Google would put adverts into their OS. You don't see Chrome stuffed with adverts now do you? :)

Even if they did, i'm sure from the feedback they'd get, the next update would remove all adverts.

Stevo, i agree, i'm sure if Mozilla made a proper OS, not like SeaMonkey or something, it would be awesome. So, i changed the topic to include both Google and Mozilla. :)

And, Wes, thanks man. Appreciate the "kindness" (or w/e you call it, can't think of the word lol ) :)

The thing is though, that if Mozilla made an OS, it would be extremely slow, crash and freeze for no apparent reason, and you'll be using safe mode more often than not.

I really need to downgrade to Mozilla 2.x again.

I'm guessing the reason Chrome doesn't have ads is because the competition doesn't (not visibly, at least). If Google could make the ads subtle enough and Windows maintained its pricing Google might win-over the lower-end PC market as ads could make their OS free.

Fixed ;)

Google's OS would probably be integrated with the internet to the nth degree, would automatically back up your computer online, and would be entirely closed-source, albeit free.

Mozilla's OS would be clean, fast, and simple, would be integrated with OpenOffice for office software, PDN for image-editing (well, we can hope, right?), etc. Applications and extensions for this OS would be written by independent programmers and hosted on Mozilla's website free of charge It would also be able to run Windows applications. Before long, cell phones would use a mobile variation of the Mozilla OS. Car computer systems would then start using it, as would aircraft avionics. The USAF would adopt it for their next fighter jet. Some smart hacker in Nigeria would then create a virus that caused all of the US military aircraft to self-destruct and sell it to China. Obviously, then, we all need to start learning Chinese as soon as a Mozilla OS comes out.

Still, it isn't like I use random plugins; I have Firebug, Download Helper and AdBlock +.

3 add-ons should not cripple a web browser.

Nope. Mozilla would opt strictly for cross platform compatibility, I do believe. Nice thought though, we can hope. :)

Google's OS would be free to use but not open source. Supported by context-sensitive advertising, it'd be tightly integrated with the internet. All files would be stored online and applications would be loaded from a server. Many of these applications would be open source and easily edited via the development tools easily accessible on the machine. Most of the commercial applications would be available in pay as you go pricing schemes and search would form a vital part of the interface.

Just my 20 pence. ;)

I have multiple add-ons (Twitter Fox.iMacros.FoxLingo.Status Bar Calc. etc) I'm on vista. It doesn't crash (maybe once a month max)

It didn't annoy me. I like a lot of the stuff Google has done. If they did anything, it would have to be better than XP or I would not be interested. I really like Chrome more than I thought I would. I'm using it now and have it as the default browser on my PC. I still use Fire Fox a lot, but Chrome is starting to be my favorite. I used to like IE 7, but after one of the many updates they did something that messed it up and it hangs and crashes. I wish Gates would come back and run Microsoft again. It was a much better company and they had real vision. Now with Balmer, not so much. I do expect Android to come out on more netbooks because I read an article in EWeek (?) and they tested it on a couple of netbooks and a laptop and it ran well. A lot of my friends use Linux from Ubuntu to Red Hat to uh, uh, the one with the little lizard(?) I just can't seem to get what I want out of it. My first web server was a Linux box and I hated it and got Windows 2000 server. I now have three servers and they are all Windows 2003 Server so I'm a little vested in Windows.

openSUSE

Thanks ! I guess it's a gecko? Maybe a chameleon? Loved the logo. I have an old Dell PC that once I pry my wife off it (she needs a new PC or laptop) I plan on making it a Linux box so I can learn to use it. I used Unix on a HP workstation years ago, so I think I can get the hang of it.

I think many Mozilla developers like Linux. So they would definitely make a Linux Distro as an OS. This means, that PdN will not run, which leads to you all still having a Windows partition.

Furthermore, I don't think it very likely, that Mozilla will make an OS because they're just big enough to make the best browser, compatible to all OSes, but making an OS would be a too great effort for them, I think, and besides it would then only be yet another Linux distro.

Google... I like Google because they do so many things for us Users, but I don't trust them enough to use a closed source OS from them. I also use Microsoft OSes only for uncritical applications. I would never do stuff like Online Banking on a closed-source-OS. Google knows quite enough about me because I use their mail (because it is far the best out there). For searching I use Ixquick. They got the European Privacy Seal because they don't store any information from you, not even your IP address.

Anyone knows another good EMailprovider? (free, lots of space, no too distracting ads)
