Stereogram / Autostereogram Tutorial

Recommended Posts

Oh, DUH. :-P I came back, one of the other mods had stickied it, and I realized I had completely forgotten to do so.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

Count me for the pyrochild kind on this one, I think my brain calculates my focus by using the allignment of my eyes, so I can't change one without changing the other, I can however focus my eye lens to object more closer, however I don't see how that could help here. As for your tip, david, as soon as I move my eyes after looking a foot behind my monitor, my eyes refocus...

History repeats itself, because nobody was paying attention the first time.

I can't see them in the normal way, either. However, if I cross my eyes slightly and attempt to weakly focus on a spot in the stereogram, it becomes apparent. Turning my head slightly seems to help.

When computers become self-aware and take over the world, the porn bots will get much, MUCH worse.

If I could've of, I would've given you the biggest hug in the world! I'm a huge fan of Magic Eye tricks and it's just plain unbelievable how you did it on PDN! Absolutely amazing!!!!!

Aww, shucks :)

The process has fascinated me for a long time too. I read up on the technique on wiki and then started playing. I now believe that the vacant 3D expression is permanently etched on my face!

The only thing I haven't been able to reproduce is the "staggering" of a single element with say the left-hand-side being nearer than the right-hand-side. I believe that this is down the the use of pixels, when I really need to step an element by half or quarter of a pixel.

(all hugs accepted & reciprocated)

So I'll just cross you off the potential list of beta-testers for the backfilling plugin shall I? Shame :(

Actually I have been working on a plugin to do backfilling (steps 18-26), and the initial right move (step 17).

Anyone wanting to give it a run through should PM me.

Any1 have any other way to try it. google, wikipedia and this forum and I still cant see it.

Aside from recreational drugs you mean?

Try searching for "Magic Eye" and see if you can find any untried viewing tips. If you find one that works for you, please let us know!

Aside from that - sorry, I just build 'em.

This looks great - I always wondered how this was done! I'll have to give this a go!

I used to love these when they first came out, but these days I have great difficulty in seeing them because a few years ago I was diagnosed with a neurological condition that's damaged my vision and amongst other things left me with very little depth perception and double vision (I tend to either use just one eye on the computer or wear an eye patch so I don't get two of everything). I have prisms in the lenses of my glasses that controls (or tries to) it, which improves things, but only rarely can I make these sort of images now. Is it possible to make these if you can't actually see them yourself, or do you actually need to be able to see the 3D effect to be able to do it?

It should be possible to make them - but you'll have to get someone to check them for you or you'll never know if they are right. Have you tried viewing the ones at the end of the tutorial? Any joy at all with them?

One of them I managed yesterday, but nothing today - I'm rather like Pryochild in that my eyes focus differently (or rather one focuses, but the other one doesn't) because the nerves that control the eye muscles are damaged on one side (hence often when reading or using the computer I just use one eye, because it's very tiring trying to get both to focus in the same place). It's probably more my problems with depth perception (which are partly to do with the focusing thing) that does it though - when I have eye tests at the hospital they use something similar to the "magic eye" pictures on glass plates during part of the test and I can never see them either.

One tip for anyone with "normal" vision but who just can't seem to see the images though is if you wear glasses for short-sightedness to try it without. The lenses in glasses compensate for your eyes not focusing where they should on the back of the eye on the retina by bending the light to change where it focuses in your eye. Because with these sort of pictures you need to try and focus "behind" the image, glasses can make it difficult because they force your eyes to focus, so to "see" the images you have to overcome the focusing effect of the lenses as well as your eyes' natural tendency to want to try and focus.

Are you getting the full 3D effect from the final image? I mean are you seeing 3D letters floating over the background in this image?

No... just looks like a bunch of dents.

You think I put together a whole tutorial just to show users how to use Dents?

Go back to the original post and find where it says:

What is a stereogram/autostereogram?

An (auto)stereogram is an image which contains a hidden 3D image within it. Viewing the image in a certain way tricks the eyes into seeing the 3D image which appears to “pop out” of the orginal image.

Follow the links given to Wikipedia.

Try the different viewing techniques detailed in the first few pages of this thread. Several methods are listed.

......@Yellowman: Yes you’re absolutely right about the colored image, the letters and the depth. Re Sig: Yes I had considered this: viewtopic.php?p=251582#p251582

Oh ..I don't know how I missed this before, I didn't see it,I can see EER in the image:

EERSignature12.jpg

I remember that I created and posted a 3D image before using a different technique called (cross-eyed)but looks like was not easy for some to view it even with the explanation details,it was more complicated on 13 levels(called 3D flowers)

I clicked on the link and I think it is so AWESOME how you made that Yellowman! Do you have a tutorial to go with it?

..although I can't see the images :(

If you've tried the viewing tips detailed in this thread then that's about all I can suggest. You might try Googling "Magic Eye" and see if you find any help there.
