Faded, blended layers?

Hmmm.. that helped me a bit, but the section of the image that I'm isolating cant be selected with the wand, so I have to use the lasso. then I cant change the tolerance and i end up with a harsh line between the two layers, like this:

aha! That look like exactly what I need! One last question though:

All of the pics in that tut use gradients that go from left to right. In the pic of the girl i'm working on I need the gradient to surround her more like a halo. How do I do that? (I've never used the gradient tool before...newbie!)
