Mike Ryan
Thanks to the both of you for the comments. I am considering doing the same manip on a larger scale for large art purposes. Thoughts?
007 Nab
I see NatGeo is continually being used Very good Manip, Mike, I like it and think it would also look good on a larger scale. Mike Ryan
Ok, so here is a major WIP of a larger version of my signature. I am experimenting with colors here, plus with methods of blending text into natural scenes. As such, there is a lot of contrast and the text needs a lot of work. Other than that, feel free to rip this apart. The more criticism the better
Mike Ryan
Ok, so here is the beginnings of another WIP. It is the same polar ice text I have been posting in the AC however now I am starting to work on a bit of a frosted glass like sheet to support the text. Here it is: Also, here is a bit of an excerpt of a new tutorial I am considering publishing: Hidden Content: Ok, so after some time working on the motion blur method for defining 3-D shapes I decided to write a replacement for Jake2K’s “lost in legacy” tutorial. I hope you enjoy this rewrite as much I did making it, and I hope that it helps you understand Paint.NET and its intricacies just that much more! atypicalcarl
It's looking better, Mike. If you're open to requests... I'd love to see that font on a darker background. Can't wait for the tut! Other than that, feel free to rip this apart. The more criticism the better Criticism? What I am trying to figure out from the manipulation is this: what are you going for? On the left, it looks like a storm is approaching (okay, that's probably because my name is Storm.Shadow ), and then on the right, it looks calm, serene, and I do detect sepia toning going on, unless my eyes deceives me. I would proceed with caution if you intend to blend the text with the scene, I don't know if we can blend it into too much or otherwise the text might disappear into the scene. I am also sort of scratching my head about the ring in the middle. I'm sure that it is intended to be a orb like your signature, so I'm just going to sit back and wait for your response. Mike Ryan
Heh, I am happy you took the time to try and figure it out. Right now, it is only about 50% done. The overall theme of the final product should introduce a struggle, with serenity filling the middle. I enjoy that you feel as if the right side is calm and the left is storm like. I completely intended for that to be opposite. Right now - as in the version opened up in Paint.NET - there is no text and the orb is more shatter like with the inner part featuring more green, growth, and hopefully peace. Thanks for the comments! @atypicalcarl: I PM'd you.

Mike Ryan
Yay! I have had more time to experiment. As many know by now, my favorite goal is to increase the flexibility of my 3D lettering. I plan on on creating better than some of Jake2K's great work Anyways, here is my latest. I plan on using it in an actual logo for one of my startups. Hope you all enjoy! Also, let it be known that trying to work with complex 3D shapes in Paint.NET is a lot trickier than I had anticipated... especially when those shapes are letter like an need to be merged

yellowman
Awesome, nice 3D effect, and very good colors, but slight perspective mistakes in 3 spots, the bottom end of the right leg of the "R", the bottom and top end of the left leg of the "M". This image is a 2 vanishing points, but you used 4 points ., it is alright most of people do not recognize that. still nice I like it. Mike Ryan
@Helen: for somebody who inspires some gloss, shine, and perfection into my work it is always nice to see you around supporting my latest images. Thanks @Yellowman: Yeah, I was aware of them but really didn't have much time to properly calculate the Rotate / Zoom function. I have a fix for this, but it has to be applied much earlier then when I noticed it. Quick question for anybody who stops by: I kind of want to experience with backdrop shadow on the object. You know, a shadow that sits on the surface and slightly portrays the overall shape. In my next attempt at this, should my rotation then blur of a silhouette of the figure match the direction in the lighting? I had a hard time with that while creating, and eventually just cut the shadows altogether. Thanks!
yellowman
I am sorry didn't get you exactly , do you mean the shadow of the object on the floor surface? Quote My GalleryMy YouTube Channel "PDN Tutorials"

Mike Ryan
Trying to fix the lighting, and give the letters that glass like appearance again. I think it is getting better...
LFC4EVER
The effects on the letters are looking really awesome. Awesome lighting on the letters too. There are bits of the letter that seem out of perspective. Its easily curable, but you'd probably have to start over. When I do this sort of lettering, i render a grid on the canvas, and use Rotate/Zoom to create a grid floor which i can refer to to get the perspective right. I hope that makes sense.. I suggest you make the shadow stronger, and use gradient blur on it. It should make the letters seem like their standing on some sort of floor or something. Also, if you're confused on a shadow, just make the letters in C4D, and render to see how the shadow turns out; then you can make it in PDN. Keep up the awesome lettering. EDIT: I got bored, so i thought i'd render something quick. Maybe this is what the shadow should look like overhead: Quote ☆★☆★Merry Christmas★☆★☆ .::.My Gallery.::.Make Gold Text!.::. Mike Ryan
@LFC: Did you render that in C4D for the overhead shadow? If so, that is how I got the shadow positioning in my latest piece. I assumed that the light was coming in from a straight 90 degree on the Z axis, however. As such, I got a much more uniform shadow, instead of a slight slant towards the R or M. @Nab and HELEN: Thanks for the compliments . I had a lot of fun with the shadows and lighting on this one, but then again looking back at some of my previous work that seems to be one of the few areas I am consistent in
007 Nab
As such, I got a much more uniform shadow, instead of a slight slant towards the R or M. That shouldn't be the case, however, because the lighting (or strong lighting) is coming in from the R in your picture. Quote "pyrochild, you're my favorite person ever. Mike Ryan
It should be coming from direct center. Could be confused because the shading of the entire R is a lighter blue then the M. Here is the PdN of the file in case anybody wants to do some inspecting: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=e016992c44abe3516e7203eb87368129e04e75f6e8ebb871
Lance McKnight
Hey Mike, been a while since I have last posted a criticism in your gallery. I like the direction you are going with 3D-lettering, and the shadowing. Making glass is a bit challenging, but try using BoltBait's transparency plugin to make the letter slightly transparent, use line tools to make a reflection, and keep the outline sharp to define the edge. Those are the wonderful tips from Helen (queen of gloss) and Ash (expert on glass). Quote Officially retired from this forum. Have a nice day. Yeah, i rendered it in C4D. I think the shadow you have needs to be more opaque; you could fade the blur too. Just make sure that if the light source is towards the front of the letters, then the shadow should slant outwards. A bit of Oct/Quad reshape/matte should fix it.
