The Installer Just doesn't run whenever I click install. It turns out, it's giving me an application error in the event viewer.

It appears your system does not meet the minimum requirements.

According to your screenshot, you are using Windows 10 20H1, but Paint.NET v5.1 requires at least Windows 10 21H2.

You'll need to run Windows Update.

Oh, it's weird that ntdll.dll has a build version 19041 instead of 19045.

You'll need to troubleshoot it further on your end.

Do you have invasive security software? or anything else that might interfere?

Will Paint.NET install if you boot into Windows Safe Mode?

Not that I know of tbh. This used to be installed pretty fine until the latest update.

If you have Sentinel One installed, you should know that it is currently breaking everything. They are aware and are working on a fix.

Yeah I've seen that in crashlogs a lot. Don't know why, not all of the system DLLs are sync'd up with the same version.

From the error code in the event log (0xc0000409), I suspect this is related to CET or CFG. I'm compiling the next update without those. So once you see a new 5.1.1 Beta (not 9087), give it a shot.

There was just a big windstorm that knocked power out for most of the Seattle area, so I do not have an estimate on when this will be available. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/climate-lab/wa-windstorm-bomb-cyclone-leaves-erratic-path-of-destruction-in-its-wake/

Until then, 5.0.13 is still available so I recommend just sticking to that. Make sure to use the "x64.install" download, not the "anycpu.install" download. https://github.com/paintdotnet/release/releases/tag/v5.0.13 . The "anycpu" installer just downloads the latest version, which is 5.1.

CET/CFG? What are those? And Tbh, I have never see any of my Paint.net updates fail that they don't show the installer, where I literally check that they crashed due to ntdll.dll, which caused an Application error in the event viewer until now.

If you want some details, both are explained here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control-flow_integrity

What has happened in the past is not relevant to the situation now due to the underlying technology changes that have gone into Paint.NET 5.1.x

As @Rick Brewster stated, he is compiling the next beta update without CET/CFG. You should try that version (i.e. later than beta 9087) when it is announced.

If they're both giving the exception code 0xc0000409, then at this point this is likely to be either 1) an over-zealous or over-configured and probably-out-of-date security software such as Norton, or 2) a virus or some kind of malware, or 3) failing hardware such as the memory or CPU.

1) I don't have Norton.

2) I don't think there's any malware.

3)Both Memory and CPU are from August 2022.

Okay Never Mind. It was at the end my own K7 AV. Disabling it for a while finally led to it installing it. It was my own stupidity at the end.

As has often been mentioned in the forum, you are recommended to uninstall 3rd-party AV solutions and use Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which is an integral part of Windows Security, and is already installed on your PC.
