When I paste an Excel grid (copied as picture - "As shown when printed") into 5.1, the fields that are transparent (don't have a fill applied) show as solid black. In 5.0 they showed as white. I'm a newbie and don't know how to fix this. Any tips?

What version of Excel are you using? I can't reproduce this, but I don't know what kind of spreadsheet you're using. You're probably more familiar with it then me. Perhaps you could provide a sample spreadsheet that I can use to reproduce this.

@Rick Brewster  The paste from clipboard behavior has changed between 5.0.13 and 5.1.

When you copy from Excel, you can either Ctrl+C the cells directly or you can Copy as Picture.

In the latter case you have options of As shown on screen  (i.e with the gridlines, etc), or As shown when printed.

If you select As shown on screen, you can choose a format of Picture or Bitmap.

Note, that this screenshot is from an older version of Excel, but there should be similar options in more recent versions.

Below are 4 variations of copying from Excel and pasting into 5.1 and 5.0.13 with the options used shown.

3.

3 and 4 are held on the clipboard as Enhanced Metafile.  Paint.NET 5.1 is handling this format differently from the way it used to work and, as @Shaun Hughes reported, transparent areas are now pasted as black.

EDIT:  Rick posted while I was writing the above!
