Latest version won't let me change canvas size with color desired?

How could they bork up such a simple task.  I just want to select the color near the edge of the image I am working on and then increase the canvas size using this color choice.  It has worked fine this way for the years I have been using this program.  I just made the mistake of upgrading to the latest version and it no longer works this way anymore.  Now when I try to increase the canvas size, making sure the color I want is the secondary color box, it increases the canvas size but now it is a checkerboard pattern like a new layer.  This is stupid and not how it has ever worked before.  I am in the middle of a project and I need this to work and I tried everything I can think of to remedy this.  Am I missing something?  Any way to correct this?  I am probably overlooking something simple but I am not a Photoshop type person professional just a piddler but I use it every day.
