Rick Brewster Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Did you run Paint.NET from within that command prompt? Otherwise it won't inherit any environment variable changes. (It's also not necessary to use an admin command prompt btw) But, since we don't see DOTNET_TieredCompilation anyway, I'm not really convinced Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

I exited and ran cmd.exe (non elevated).... still same results.... cmd prompt in the foreground, mad PDN in the background. Ken Quote

Rick Brewster Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Some other environment variable settings to try: set DOTNET_TieredCompilation=1 (the opposite of what we tried above) set DOTNET_ReadyToRun=0 (app will start up slower, but if it works then at least it works) Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

Hmmm. I wonder how users of the Windows Store version of Paint.NET can add a Sentinel One exclusion? Is there a suitable 'Exclusion type' or are you expected to find the path for the Store app (not recommended to try). Quote

It's not hard to get, it's just in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps which you should be able to access from an administrator command prompt. But it will change whenever there's an update because it has the version in it. nuk Posted November 18 Posted November 18 (edited) Thanks for the help guys and suggestion to downgrade to 5.0.13. My company recently added SentinelOne to our work computers, too, and it broke the MS Store version of Paint.NET that I had. Some additional observations I haven't seen anyone else mention in this thread: To install 5.0.13, I had to use the x64 installer instead of the anycpu installer to avoid the error above. Attempting the portable installs, I can confirm that 5.0.13 works on my system while 5.1 does not. The anycpu installers for both 5.0.13 and 5.1 trigger the same error for me: The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application. Am able to continue with my work now, thanks again. Hopefully SentinelOne fixes their false positives sooner rather than later. Edited November 18 by nuk Quote
Rick Brewster Posted November 18 Posted November 18 Quote SentinelOne has been made aware and is looking into the issue. ^^^ quote from them, sent directly to me 1 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
TechNerd123 Posted November 18 Posted November 18 Adding that 5.1 also does not work with Sonicwall Capture Client as the EDR (it uses SentinelOne under the hood, so that makes sense, of course). Rolled back to 5.0.13 (x64 installer) and everything is fine. 1 Quote
gappvembe Posted November 19 Posted November 19 (edited) Hi all. I am also dealing with this, (I also have sentinel one) so thank you google search. I installed 5.0.13 yesterday, and it worked as a temp fix. Unchecked updates. As of this morning, it is hanging up again. edit: Uninstalling it, I find out that it was 5.1 again.... not sure how that happened. AND THAT WORKED! gappvembe Posted November 19 Posted November 19 So, I see what is going on, not sure why, but 5.0.13 is autoupdating to 5.1, even though it is unchecked: https://streamable.com/yyfn2l Quote
ghostrat26 Posted November 19 Posted November 19 Hi Team, I have the same issue with 5.1 version, crash on opening. I will test adding into SentinelOne the executable into exclusion list and see if it works (but strange because SentinelOne didnt appear any notification related to Paint.NET). Thanks. Quote

That might be something your IT department or network admin is pushing down. Paint.NET can't auto-update "invisibly" like that unless you have the Microsoft Store release installed.
