This is a quick follow-up to the previous build, fixing a few more small bugs and improving performance.

Change Log

Changes since 5.1 beta (build 9070):

  • Fixed a few more cases where tool shortcuts and tooltips were not working after certain actions.
  • Fixed: PNGs are now correctly saved with the "Software" tEXt metadata indicating they were created with Paint.NET.
  • Improved performance in various parts of the rendering and effects engines: CPU usage has been reduced which permits higher GPU utilization.

Download and Install

This build is available via the built-in updater as long as you have opted-in to pre-release updates. From within Settings -> Updates, enable "Also check for pre-release (beta) versions of paint.net" and then click on the Check Now button. You can also use the links below to download an offline installer or portable ZIP.

You can also download the installer here (for any supported CPU and OS), which is also where you can find downloads for offline installers, portable ZIPs, and deployable MSIs.

Oops... I found a small bug - if the image is much smaller than the window, when you select the "Zoom to window" mode, it is simply centered without resizing. Is this how it should be? Is it not a bug? Just noticed.

If the image is larger than the window, it fits correctly, it's ok. Setting the scale to 100% also works correctly.

😄 I don't think so.

You just forgot to check the Documentation first. Click the :Help: Help icon top right, or press F1, or go directly to https://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/ViewMenu.html#4, where it says:

Zoom.png

So Zoom to Window or Ctrl+B will give the behaviour as Rick described.

If you want zoom in for small windows, teach your fingers to always do: Ctrl+A  Ctrl+Shift+B  for  Select All  Zoom to Selection

I'm a programmer, reading documentation is not for me 😂
Thank you very much for such a detailed answer. I apologize for once again taking up so much time over nonsense.

I found built-in Curves tool applies tone curves in the linear color space.

While it's not a right or wrong thing, I think that's a bit unusual.

I don't think that's intentional. I know I experimented with it at one point but I don't believe I intended to land it that way. I'll fix it, thanks!

[Moderator edit: Moved to here from the Paint.NET 5.0.13 release thread]

I'm using the latest update, Paint.NET 5.1 (β 5.100.9072.2203)

Bug: The keyboard shortcut for, "Image > Crop to Selection" doesn't work. Can somewhere verify this is the case, not only me?

The shortcut Ctrl+Shift+X does work with v5.1 beta.

Please do a forum search before reporting bugs.
For a possible reason that it is not working for you, see:

If you still believe this to be a v5.1 beta problem, please reinstall 5.0.13 and verify that it does work in that version, then update this bug report.

Thank you. The link provided led to saying people had the same issue. It was in the AMD software and by disabling "use hotkeys" Paint.net fuctions correctly.

Bug: Pan Tool - Panning using the up/down arrow keys does not pan the canvas.

Reproduction:

  1. Start Paint.NET which will create a new image.

  2. Press Ctrl+B so the scroll bars appear indicating that the canvas is now panable.

  3. Press H to activate the Pan tool.

  4. Hold down the Left mouse button and press the or arrow keys.
The canvas pans left or right as expected.

  5. Hold down the Left mouse button and press the or  arrow keys.
The canvas does not pan up or down as expected. Instead the pan cursor is repositioned, which is the expected behaviour if the mouse button is not held down.

Holding down the Right mouse button, which is also valid for arrow panning, produces the same results as above.

Note: This is a regression from the correct behaviour in earlier versions of Paint.NET:

  • 5.1 beta does not work
  • 5.0.13 does not work
  • 4.3.12 works as expected

4.3.12 is the only earlier version I have to test with, so I am unable to say which release introduced the bug.

Note: Using the temporary activation method for panning, i.e holding down Spacebar and dragging with Left mouse button / pressing keyboard arrow keys, does work for all 4 arrow keys.

Thanks -- I'll look into it for 5.1.x. In the meantime, perhaps this bug is manifesting in other places too? Could be worth further investigation.

I'm ahead of you 😉

I've been systematically checking arrow movements for each of the tools.

Bug: The mouse pointer for Paint Bucket / Gradient / Magic Wand is sometimes displayed incorrectly as a regular 'arrow pointer' instead of the correct tool pointer.

Reproduction
Instructions are for Paint Bucket. A similar result is obtained for Gradient and Magic Wand.

Setup:
1. Start Paint.NET
2. Click on the Paint Bucket tool icon [or Gradient or Magic Wand tool icon].

3. Position the mouse pointer over the canvas. As expected, the pointer changes to the Paint Bucket symbol.

Bug 1:

4. Press Enter or Esc (equivalent to doing Finish).

Expected result: Pointer should always remain as the Paint Bucket symbol (1st line of image below)

Actual result: Sometimes the pointer changes to the arrow pointer symbol (2nd line of image below) until the mouse is moved slightly, at which time it becomes the Paint Bucket symbol. If the incorrect pointer is not displayed, then repeat step 4 until the bug occurs.

Related Bug 2:

5. Press S. Pointer changes to the Rectangle Select symbol.

6. Press F  [or G for Gradient, or Shift+S for Magic Wand]

Expected result: Pointer should always change to the Paint Bucket symbol (3rd line of image below)

Actual result: Sometimes the pointer changes to the arrow pointer symbol (4th line of image below) until the mouse is moved slightly, at which time it becomes the Paint Bucket symbol. If the incorrect pointer is not displayed, then repeat steps 5 and 6 until the bug occurs.

Notes:

1. This is a 5.1 beta regression. 5.0.13 does not have this bug.

2. I normally see the wrong pointer after 1, 2 or 3 presses of Enter/Esc  or after 1, 2 or 3 switches of the tool from S to F   [or to G or Shift+S].

3. The bug does not appear to affect any other tools.
