It has helped a lot of new users understand the different features in paint.net and how to use them properly. Mainly, layers are used to undo big mistakes. If you keep every different object/effect on a different layer, then if you find something you don't like you can always go back and edit it. Also, if you really want to make it less confusing, name your layers as you go. This may be annoying to get use to (I'm still kicking myself in the butt when I don't name 'em) but it will pay off dearly when you are done with your piece. Also, since you are new, I would like to direct you to the forum rules located here: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=3446. Read through them util you get the jist of all them.
