Pinsplash
I have 200 wide images In 200 layers that i want to put on each other. Example of the desired effect below. This was done with "align and distribute" in inkscape, but this is not suitable because the sorting of the images makes no sense.

People will try to guess what you mean. Everyone will guess differently. So, imagine we know nothing about what you are doing (because we currently don't), then please: Show us the images you are starting with and how they are currently positioned in your 200 layers. Explain the order they are currently in. Does it relate directly to the order of layers in the Layers window? Explain the sorting order you want when the images are stacked vertically. Once we know this, people may be able to help.
Rick Brewster
Yeah I don’t have the slightest idea what you’re trying to accomplish Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
IHaveNoName
I think I understand but apologies if I have it wrong. The OP wants to have the layers of whatever images he is talking so they are arranged in a specific order on top of each other. The problem I believe I have come across is that some images are identified by random file names or if they contain letters and numbers are listed alphabetically rather than by the numbers. I think the problem here is that the program he has been using, Inkscape, lists all the layers under exactly the same file name. In the case of numbered files you can get problems if they're not numbered in a specific way ie. 001, 002, 003 etc. If they're numbered 1, 2, 3 etc instead the images in some graphics programs may list them 1, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 2, 20, 21 and it gets worse when dealing with hundreds of image files. Re-numbering may have to be done manually which is a painfully boring thing to have to do. But if there is a solution here with PDN that is not as tedious I don't know for sure. If he uses PDN Layers > Import From File all the files will be arranged in separate layers but will they be in the same order as wanted or does PDN arrange them alphabetically or numerically? I've just done a quick test both mixing up images with file names alphabetically and then numerically and PDN appears to import them in whatever order your Windows file/folder display View order is set to eg. by name, date, size, type etc either ascending or descending. So I believe that if the images he wants to layer in a specific order are arranged by Windows in that order then PDN Layers will keep that order in its layers as well. However I think where there may be a problem is when importing the image file layers into Windows from Inkscape which I'm pretty sure he will have to do unless there is a way of importing them directly. IHaveNoName
We'll just have to wait for the OP to reply to answer that but I wouldn't be surprised if we don't hear back. BTW is there a problem on the forum today? I've had trouble signing in for the last ten minutes with a warning about a server error.
Pinsplash
Sorry, I was gone for a bit. I would want them sorted in the order of the layers. The images were extracted from a video and the order of that needs to be preserved. When importing them in Paint.net they seem to be sorted by filename, so the first frame is on the bottom layer and the last is on the top. I plan to feed the combined image into a text extraction tool and from there I know how I would manipulate the text as needed, so I don't mind if it's in reverse order. Solution Tactilis Posted September 23 Solution Share Posted September 23 @Pinsplash You cannot do this in paint.net. However, now understanding what you are trying to achieve, I just Google searched for join images in vertical strip and the first hit was this: https://www.reddit.com/r/photoshop/comments/6wen1r/combining_multiple_images_into_a_vertical_strip/ This suggests an easy way to do what you want using simple ImageMagick command line arguments. I plan to feed the combined image into a text extraction tool @Pinsplash Are you trying to do image-to-text conversion of subtitles that are hardcoded into a video file? If that is the actual problem to solve, then there are ways of doing so that sidestep the complicated procedure you are trying to follow. Googling extract subtitles from video gives some options.
