HankP
This seems simple, and it is probably included in the code, but I just cannot find it. It there a way (for instance a macro keystroke) to "re-select" the same area that you just used? For example, suppose I select a complex-shaped area while in Layer1, and I delete it. After the deletion, PDN de-selects that area automatically. But I want to do something to the EXACT SAME area in Layer2. There simply MUST be a way to just re-select the area that PDN just de-selected, right?

You need to copy the selection geometry and then paste it again after doing the delete. See Edit > Copy Selection and Edit > Paste Selection > Replace The shortcut keys are Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C and Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V It's well explained in the Documentation here: https://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/EditMenu.html#9.
Tactilis
Following on from my comment above... You might object that you have to remember to do the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C to copy the selection geometry before you do the Delete (or any other operation that deselects the current selection) so that you can subsequently paste it. While this is true, all is not lost if you forget, because copying the selection geometry does not affect the History. So you can Ctrl+Z to Undo the operation that deselected the current selection, then do the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C, and finally Ctrl+Y to Redo the operation. You now have your original selection geometry on the clipboard, ready to paste when required.
