andyz
Perhaps this is a bug - I use keys to zoom more than the magnifying glass drag/buttons. If I create a new small image (say 64x64) and zoom in with keys the zoom is a bit all over the place! It is not centred on the image as with the mouse zoom. So then I need a key to centre the view on the image but Ctrl-B zooms out again! Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-Shift-B is one option I found after a bit of looking but not ideal combo and selects all! (latest paint.net) Edit - it seems this is quite complicated - the zoom can depend on where the mouse cursor is - if cursor over image it zooms in toward that point, if just over paint.net but not over a small image it zooms 'away' from the cursor as you zoom in? This is more troublesome with small images that only take up a portion of the window. Anyhow if there is or can be a shortcut to centre the image at current zoom level it would be great. Otherwise it is just about understanding how it zooms when dealing with very small images - icon size etc. Also the "View->Fit to window" does not really work for small images, in that it does not zoom in to them. It will only zoom out of a large image Edited August 21 by andyz

Whether the mouse pointer is over the image or is over the canvas background that surrounds the image, the zoom behaviour is the same. When you zoom in, using either the mouse wheel or a Ctrl++ keypress, then the zoom is centred on the mouse pointer. For example, if the pointer is over the canvas background to the left of the image, then the image will naturally move rightwards as the entire work area, i.e. canvas background + image, is zoomed in. andyz
OK - how I did not notice the mouse cursor is the root of the zooming?! Well if you know it, it works! I think the process I went through was Open an image - use the keys to zoom. And so never placing the cursor directly over a small image means odd zoom and it flies off to one side! It's more obvious what is happening with a mouse and you use Ctrl +Mouse Wheel to zoom. Are you by chance working on a laptop and that is why you prefer using keys to zoom instead of a mouse? If so, have you tried two-finger pinch-to-zoom on the laptop's touchpad? In Windows 11 (I'm not sure about 10) you can enable this in: Windows > Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch > Touchpad You can also set two-finger left-right / up-down scrolling from the touchpad.
