erase selection doesn't work at all

hi! so usually when i would be removing something from my image, i would use the erase selection. although recently i came across a problem - the shortcut which i used (delete) does not work anymore. i now have to do shift + del to do the erase selection but it's a bit of a problem now. i have no idea what happened and would love any advice. thanks!

using normal eraser isn't as fast and not really practical for me, it kinda slows down my process.

I'm not sure what you are using to 'select' what you want to erase.

 

The simplest way is to select the area and then hit delete on your keyboard.

hi! the thing is - the delete key doesn't work for some reason. i do the rectangle select and click delete and it doesn't work. it just stays selected as if i've never clicked delete. i have no idea what happened because it worked perfectly fine earlier

1. Which version of paint.net are you using?

2. Are you using Windows 10 or 11?

Are you running Windows and Paint.NET in English or some other language, like Polish, for example?

@nelly Does the Delete key work correctly in other applications?

For example, if you open Notepad, type some text and then press Delete, does the character to the left of the cursor get deleted?

 

I'm just making sure that you don't have something running that has re-mapped the Delete key to some other operation.

hi! your method has helped me to notice that... my num lock was on; it was the cause of erase selection not working. i turned off the num lock and it works perfectly again. thank you so much!

To avoid this in the future, you could always use the Delete key on the main keyboard, rather than the numpad Delete key, because that isn't affected by Numlock.
