paint.net 5.1 alpha build 8930

Recommended Posts

This is a small follow-up to 5.1 alpha build 8929 that fixes a few bugs and adds HDR support for Windows 10.

For more information on the upcoming 5.1 release of Paint.NET, be sure to read the release notes for build 8900, as well as the release notes for build 8929. Highlights include color management, HDR and Wide Color Gamut (WCG) display support, some new and updated effects, and canvas customization settings.

This build is available via the built-in updater as long as you have opted-in to pre-release updates. From within Settings -> Updates, enable "Also check for pre-release (beta) versions of paint.net" and then click on the Check Now button. You can also use the links below to download an offline installer or portable ZIP.

You can also download the installer here (for any supported CPU and OS), which is also where you can find downloads for offline installers, portable ZIPs, and deployable MSIs.

Changes since 5.1 alpha build 8929:

  • Fixed: HDR displays are now supported on Windows 10 (previously required Windows 11). They will no longer fall back to sRGB mode.
  • Fixed the selected pixels going invisible with the Move Selected Pixels tool when the scale factor was greater than 2 on either axis
  • Fixed an internal color profile cache bug that was preventing images from loading
  • Fixed title bar text rendering legibility on systems at 100% scaling (96 DPI)

There is currently a bug with the "Use the display's color profile" checkbox in Settings -> Color Management: if it is unchecked (disabled) and you check it (enable it), it will not actually take effect until you close and reopen the image. Or you can probably toggle "Enable hardware acceleration" in Settings->Graphics, which will reinitialize the canvas rendering code.

Also coming for the next build are some significant performance optimizations for the canvas. This will especially improve performance for software rendering, and for integrated GPUs from the likes of Intel or AMD, or lower-end and older GPUs like GeForce 1030, Quadro P400, etc.

The next alpha build will also be removing the "Use the display's color profile" setting. Instead, only "Windows Advanced Color" will be available, and if you want display-accurate color you will need to enable either HDR mode, or WCG mode (via "Automatically manage color for apps", aka Automatic Color Management, aka ACM). This is how modern Windows wants apps to do this, and I'm taking advantage of this new functionality (WCG / ACM) to greatly simplify PDN's color management code so that I can keep things focused and maintainable for the future.

I encourage everyone to enable "Automatically manage color for apps" if your OS supports it (Windows 11 v22H2+), and if you're not already using HDR mode (which many find to be, shall we say, finnicky). To facilitate this, I'm adding some (hopefully) helpful text to the Color Management settings page to lead you in the right direction:
