How do I change the background colour?

Forgive me as a beginner but how do I colour the background as the image in the middle I am leaving white

Welcome to the forum and to Paint.NET

As a beginner, you need learn how some basic concepts (e.g selections, tools, colours, layers etc) are handled in Paint.NET.

Best way to do that is to work your way through the well written Documentation and try out each example that is shown there.

You can view the Documentation by clicking the icon at the top right of the Paint.NET window or pressing the F1 key.

I don't quite understand what you mean.  If you want to re-color the background, just pick a color and fill the white using the Bucket Tool.

 

If you don't want the white background at all, just un-check the box and it will then be transparent.
