How do shortcut keys work?

Recommended Posts

I'm struggling today with learning to use this program, the tooltips on the "selection rectangle" for move selection and move pixels are M and Mx2 or SHIFT+M , but the MM and SHIFT+M don't do anything at all for some reason - I'm clearly missing something basic.

I just tested those shortcuts and they are working fine :)

When you say they don't do anything, do you mean that when you press those keys, they don't switch back and forth to their respective positions?

The two shortcuts switch betweed the two tools in the upper right corner of this image.

Clarification: Mx2 means press M twice. The same as M M.

What you seem to be missing is the comprehensive Documentation.

Click the blue ? icon top right in Paint.NET which will take you here https://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/index.html

For the Tools, see here https://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/ToolsWindow.html then look at the Move tools https://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/MoveTools.html

You'll soon get the hang of it and find that using the keyboard shortcuts help speed things up greatly.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the pointers to persevere, my main aim is to get more efficient, and just re-reading the docs has uncovered a few organiser tips.

I'll have to do a screen recording or some-such to show how this is not working. I think part of the issue is that if you tap a toolbar to set focus to it, that the behaviour changes. The hotkeys work on this computer (version 5.9.8621) but not on my other desktop. So I'll have to go back to that computer to repro and update. Pretty sure it's just that computer.
