I newly have a Windows 10 system, installed Paint.net, and reinstalled existing working fonts on the new computer. 

 

Paint.net and all my fonts worked perfectly fine every time when I was on my Windows 7 system. Hardware died and I got a new computer - and now this Paint.net version 5 is crashing every time I select a font to try to make something.

 

Paint.net crashes instantly and has done it 3 times in a row so far selecting 3 different fonts.

 

These are reputably-acquired fonts that worked perfectly fine in a previous version of Paint.net.

Did you put these fonts into the Windows Fonts?

There's no menu. The font file has to be opened to install it and there's an Install button. Click it and it happens.

No idea what that is. There's a simple Install button in the font's file. The fonts are working perfectly fine in GIMP. They also work in Microsoft Word. it's a Paint.net problem only.

This is an error coming from DirectWrite itself, which is the Windows component responsible for all things fonts/text/typography. This to me indicates some kind of system corruption, or one of your fonts cannot be handled by DirectWrite.

 

You should make sure you are caught up with all Windows Updates. Check for updates, let them install, reboot, check for updates again ... repeat until there's no updates. Quite often a new installation of Windows will not have the latest updates, and things like DirectWrite often get fixes for stuff like this.

Does PDN crash when using any of the typical Windows fonts? What about Ariel, Consolas or Lucinda? If you dont have the option via right clicking the font then it could be a user account permission (lack of) or the font is not compatible. Which could explain the crashes.

I actually use the Ariel and Lucida font families often, and I don’t remember anything about them causing crashes.

 

Furthermore, I use a lot of bitmap fonts (pixel typography is sorta my thing ), and they’ve never caused problems for me.

I actually have quite a bit of trust in @Disk4mat’s hypothesis, as it could be a problem that said fonts aren’t installed for all users.

Yeah, this might sound a little weird (especially if your machine only has one user), but a lot of the time, Windows likes to think its running in an office environment (a lot of schools and offices use Windows as their OS), but you have to make sure that all downloads are for the entire computer to have access to, so problems like this won’t happen.

 

Hopefully their hypothesis helps out.

There have been some updates on Carla's issue.  I am in IT and have been assisting as I can, granted, this is software I have never used.

So, her system had gotten the Windows10 Black screen with the spinning blue circle.  Ended up not being a recoverable issue and a reinstallation was done.

Windows 10 Pro 64.  Fully updated.  And this process to get fonts going right is on again.

Carla is pretty meticulous about note taking and keeping track of details, so she had marked what fonts had worked last time and which had not, and order of installation.  Also, again we had to roll back to an older version of Paint.net to make these work at all.  Now all of the fonts installed will work for various programs that have font options, and all that have been installed are working as far as windows goes, or MS Word, and GIMP, but NOT in Paint.net.

Here is where things get a bit weird.  She installed fonts in a different order this time, and several fonts that were not working on the previous W10 install are working now, these were installed first this time.  And fonts that had worked fine on the previous load are not not working.  It is almost behaving like there is a cap of how many can be loaded.

Paint.net sees that there should be a font there but gives the Yellow triangle with the exclamation point, and when you mouse over the font normally paint.net will show what the text would look like with that font, now it will for fonts withOUT the yellow triangle and !, for items with the triangle! it just shows a generic font like Ariel.

As none of this happened in Win7 before, this seems to be some combination of Win10 and Paint.net, as these installed fonts work everywhere else.

@ThatOneGuy63, This is still a problem that only you are experiencing. Paint.NET loads and uses fonts via DirectWrite, which is used by a lot of software these days. If DirectWrite cannot handle the font, then Paint.NET cannot handle the font. So this isn't really a Paint.NET issue at this point. There's something you're doing with regards to your fonts, or installation of your fonts, that seems to be incorrect. Or maybe, even though you reinstalled all of Windows, you could still be having some kind of hardware failure. It really sounds like your fonts are corrupted, or maybe coming across the network corrupted.

For the rest of us, we put all of our downloaded fonts into the Windows Font Folder.

 

 

If you are seeing the yellow triangle , you need to go into the Fonts Folder, click on that font and find the option for it to be seen.

Ok so if this is a direct write issue and "cannot handle" a font, or of the font installer files are corrupted, then why does load order matter?  When added in a different order fonts that worked before do not work now and vice versa.  Not saying Direct Write cant be an issue but the problem is VERY inconsistent.  

If it is hardware driven, such as a gpu that has issues, then why does again the order of installation matter?

Does direct write specifically render using the gpu side of the processing as opposed to cpu?  If so is there a way to push it to cpu (similar to how you can have a Browser do its processing/rendering with the gpu or with the cpu, via checkbox?  Pushing browsers away from gpu rendering can resolve a lot of oddities.  Is this something that can he tested?

Carla has always done it this way, while not IT, she is not a novice with PC's.

This is exactly why I think it's a hardware issue. Not the GPU though. Probably the hard drive, possibly memory. Because load order does not matter, but for some reason it is for you. And because it's so inconsistent.

 

You should run a full hard drive scan, like with chkdsk at an administrator command prompt.

chkdsk C: /R

(have to put it in code otherwise the C : becomes 😄 )

 

You can also download the trial of a program called StableBit Scanner, which is my preferred tool for that.

 

The other tool to run is Windows Memory Diagnostic. You can also use the 3rd-party tool memtest86 which is much more thorough, but has to be run overnight.

Well at this point I have tested it on my Windows 10 Laptop, as well as a Windows 11 VM, and the issues are still present. 

I will not argue that there is an issue with her system, that is separate at this point and I am working on that. 

 

I tried to get her up and running on my laptop, its stock and has not had a problem in the 3 years I have had it.  Then it got the same issues. 

Went onto my system, launched a W11 VM to see if it was similar with the newer OS, and the same problem.  Her system is a Ryzen 5, my laptop is a model 2019 i7 mobile, and my system is an i9 7900x, while i doubt the specifics of the hardware matters, it was more to the point of significant hardware differences on all items with similar issues.

 

Also, both other systems all of the fonts worked fine in other applications like Word etc, no issues.

I went and found them in the folder, and they are all there, and you can right click and see them in the font viewer, and in that location give no indication of an issue.

Thanks for the idea though, got me looking into a different direction.
