Cloudydays
Good evening everyone, Tonight I've ran into a rather peculiar issue that seemingly came out of nowhere, as paint.net was operating just fine up until a few minutes ago. I'm working with the pencil tool that comes with paint.net, and upon placing a pixel with it, it seems to delete sections of the image I'm working on in a berth of 3x3 pixels, while also making one side of the affected area, one more pixel out, seemingly disappear while I apply pressure to the mouse. I have no idea what's causing this issue, and having reinstalled paint.net and my plugins already, am at a loss for what could be causing this all of a sudden. Stranger still is that it doesn't seem to do it consistently. I've added a gif version of what's going on below. Whenever it reverts to the pixels being there is when I hit undo to try again. Any experience with this?
Rick Brewster
Oh this is happening for me too. I'll look into it. What version are you using? Are you on the new 5.0? Rick Brewster
There seems to be an issue with the blending code somewhere, I'm investigating more ... For now, you can work around this by setting the blend mode to Overwrite in the toolbar. It's a decent workaround if you're using the pencil tool with opaque colors. This also affects other tools, but not ones where the blending is Overwrite, or if the rendering of the tool is effectively using Overwrite (e.g. the Move Selected Pixels tool). Rick Brewster
Okay I found and fixed the bug. I was a simple typo in some low-level rendering code ... 1 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
Rick Brewster
BTW this will only happen on images of width 2 and only when they're small enough. Rick Brewster
I should have a 5.0.1 release with this fix, and a few others, sometime this weekend. 1 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

So it's definitely a new bug that none of us caught -- I guess we don't work with tiny 2-pixel wide images often enough Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

Ooh, does that make this the first obscure bugfix since releasing version 5?

Nah there's been about a handful. But they've all been small and niche, thankfully.
