ResX Update

Yaron

Recommended Posts

Im sorry If there's already an answer to that on the forums

But how do I update the language file (I translated 3.20 and now I want to adjust my translation to 3.36)

And I really don't feel like copying the strings manually or translating it all over again

What should I do?

Best Regards,

There are many Diff tools, some free, some shareware. You need one to spot the differences between two RESX english files, for two subsequent releases of Paint.NET.

I use DiffMerge, which spots differences to the letter level and is free.

Other free tools are:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/winmerge/

http://www.pspad.com/index_en.html (diff module is integrated in the app)

And some shareware ones:

Thanks for the informative reply

i'll sure keep in mind about these...

at the meanwhile im trying to put my hands on the 3.36 english resx which I can't find (I thought about getting it from the sources but because of the license violation it might not be available that soon)

Anyways, I hope there will be a new version of Hebrew anytime soon

Best regards!

You are right, the source code is not available anymore. I didn't notice that. Actually just ask Rick for the 3.36 RESX file, it will surely send it to you. And if the source code is (temporarily) not available, the RESX file could be put somewhere in the download page for the new translators.

Yaron,

Search for resgen.exe.

It's part of the MS .NET SDK, but if you Google for it you will find some separate downloads for it as well.

Use resgen.exe to convert the current PaintDotNet.Strings.3.resources file into an XML PaintDotNet.Strings.3.resx file.

Load the PaintDotNet.Strings.3.resx file together with your .3.IL.resx in a diff tool like WinMerge.

This will help you to add the strings that have been introduced since 3.20, as well as to check your translations.

Take special care of "empty" strings, as their handling has been changed, which will cause resgen to raise alarms.

Use Rick's ResxCheck tool to check if your .resx file is alright.

After all the merging and translating is done, use resgen.exe again to translate the 3.IL.resx into a .resources file and you're done.

Note that you will need .NET 3.5 (SP1?) installed on your machine to use these two utilities.

Good luck,

Stephan

I already have the 3.5 .NET framework

What I don't have is the appropriate resgen.exe, I just can't find it using the search terms you provided or any other search terms

I have the older resgen.exe but it is not usefull because the file won't decompile with a weird error

I would love if someone could please tell me what packaged should I install from the SDK so this tool will be installed or if someone could simply just send the file over to me...

Best Regards to all helpers,

Yaron

Come on, send a personal message to Rick, he will give you the source code of Paint.NET or only the items that you need (ResGen.exe and the Resx file). You just want to translate the software, there's nothing wrong with that.

And I really appreciate you for this!

But my next problem is how do I merge the translation of 3.20 into the translation of 3.36, the file structure have changed and all the XML diff tools work exactly like the normal diff tools on XML files...

Any suggestions?

Yaron,

I've only been involved in recent updates of the Dutch translation, so I don't know much about differences between 3.20 and 3.36. I did stumble upon some changes in the handling of empty strings, which caused resxgen to fire error messages, but once determined this was easily resolved.

As far as I can tell, there would appear to be no easy way around the problem.

It's either starting anew with your Hebrew translation based upon the latest English source file, or continue to adapt your existing translation guided by the the latest strings.

"The only way out is through."

I assume that proceeding with the 3.20 translation is still easier to do than starting anew.

Regards,

Stephan
