Paint.net Crashes w/ No Log Whenever Adjustments are Used

I have repaired paint.net, deleted and reinstalled paint.net, and used chkdsk and sfc/scannow (whatever those do.) I am still getting constant crashes if I use adjustments, or do something 'too fast,' or sometimes even right after I save a pdn. I checked crash logs and it's empty, and I've perused every forum I could find on the subject. I use it a lot and this started happening after this last update. It starts giving me a loading symbol, then says not responding then crashes. I have a really good computer with great ram and a great processor.

I've gotten a handful of reports on this and I'd love to get to the bottom of it.

Can you try running Paint.NET with the /setenv:COMPlus_legacyCorruptedStateExceptionsPolicy=1 parameter and see if you can get a crash log?

You can do this by going to Run (WinKey+R or right-click-on-Start and then Run), paste that in and then press OK :

I can only see limited information about your hardware. You should check your notebook manufacturer's website.

Generally true, Windows Update handles the updates itself. But this process is a bit slow when it comes to non-Microsoft products/hardware.

Ok, maybe your GPU configuration and Paint.net are clashing deep somewhere in the code. Kinda shooting in the dark here, but could you try turning off hardware-accelerated rendering? This will stop using the GPU; at the very least it'll scrub GPU off the problems list.

You can find the settings for it on the top right corner (gear icon). It's the very first checkbox, should be visible as soon as the settings opens.

Also, tools stop working, usually pencil or the select tools. They don't work again until I close the application and start again

ShadowPlay is now labeled as "In-game Overlay" in the Nvidia configuration. Maybe the "ShadowPlay" branding has been phased-out; I'm not sure.

You have two GPUs, the Intel and the NVIDIA. It looks like Paint.NET is configured to use the Intel GPU. You can force Paint.NET to use the NVIDIA GPU like so:

1. Click on Start, type "Graphics"

2. You should see "Graphics Settings" in the search results. Click on it.

3. Click on the Browse button

4. Navigate to C:\Program Files\paint.net and then double click on paintdotnet.exe

5. Click on paint.net in the list below, then click on Options

6. Click on "Specific GPU", then choose the NVIDIA GPU.

7. Click Save

8. Make sure Paint.NET is not running, and then start it up again. (don't forget to re-enable hardware accelerated rendering in the in-app settings)

If this works then it probably means there's a bug in the Intel GPU driver.
