Can everyone do the following / answer these questions ...

1) When looking at Task Manager, is Paint.NET sitting "idle" or is it using up a ton of CPU time? If it's using a lot of CPU time, then creating a "performance trace" and sending it to me may be very helpful.

2) Please post the diagnostics information from Settings (gear icon at top right of main window) -> Diagnostics -> Copy to Clipboard

3) If you haven't already, make sure to restart and try running the app again.

4) In Settings, disable "Hardware accelerated rendering" and "Animations" and report back if that helps. Try to see which combination of those settings works, or doesn't.

1.

2. I already made sure to post mine.

3. It didn't help.

4. Turned off both and nothing happened.

FOUND A WORKAROUND:

You must enable "Translucent windows" option in Settings, otherwise the problem will occur.

I think this is actually caused by a regression (new bug) in WinForms in .NET 6.0.1. This change is super duper suspicious: https://github.com/dotnet/winforms/pull/6114

Okay I have a build with what should be a fix (everything works great over here now!). This is definitely 100% a bug introduced in .NET 6.0.1, so I'll be filing a bug report over in the GitHub repository as well

Installer (x64): https://www.getpaint.net/files/zip/test/paint.net.4.307.8039.29774.install.x64.zip

Portable ZIP (x64): https://www.getpaint.net/files/zip/test/paint.net.4.307.8039.29774.portable.x64.zip

Please install or use the portable version and confirm that things work as they're supposed to. Once I get some confirmation(s) that things are good, I'll go ahead and publish 4.3.7 through the updater.

I'm able to reproduce all the issues reported here using 4.3.6, but none of them with 4.3.7, so I'm feeling pretty comfortable with releasing this.

Me either even without "Translucent windows" option being enabled!

I have to say that I am/was using the portable 64 bit Windows version 4.3.6 before the update and I tried turning off Translucent Windows, closing and restarting PDN and I didn't have any of the problems as far as I tested it.

The update works fine too.

But I am using it on a Win 7 PC with, so it tells me: v4.8 NET Framework installed so it does provide some more evidence that the current .NET 6.0.1 is the possible source of the problem if the other users who've experienced the problems described in this thread are all using the latter too.

After a couple of seconds, CPU time sits at 0% here. And that includes 4.3.7, as well

Thanks also for the PNG explanation

.NET 4.8 won't have any affect on this.
