UK returns to imperial units

Just red in the Times that the UK government decided that companies have to scrap metric units and return to pound, ounces, and pints.

What a big advantage of independence and freedom.

Soon every country in the world will follow Global Britain and use their own units.

Companies will no longer be prosecuted for using British standard units. Nothing to do with removing S.I. units .BBC version
It was ridiculous that pints of beer could not be sold in pint glasses and that grocers could go to jail for selling a pound of bananas. All due to orders from the evil empire (E.U.).

The E.U. must be a terrible place now judging by the number of migrants trying to escape across the English channel.☹️

 

I would have thought the death of Sir Clive Sinclair would have been a more relevant subject for someone claiming to have advanced programming skills?

This news was very sad for me today - his ZX Spectrum was my assistant in learning Assembly Language for the Z-80 for many years.

Yeah, it's sometimes a disadvantage to be the homeland of a language which people are using worldwide. Not like German or French.

Still you should be happy that there is the French channel.

 

In Swizerland we are using Deziliter (tenth of a liter) to measure bear. Everything is small.

 

At the end let's see what the UK goverment decides. And as I remember it was not forbidden to add imperial units but a must to use metric. Which make sense in a global world. So maybe it will be now vice versa.

 

And for sure i noticed the death Sir Sinclair (independent of my potential programming skills, others have to  judge this ;-).

So RIP Clive.

But I'm much more interested to see what's going on in the future and not in the past.

When I first visited Australia (many moons ago ) the beer 🍺 was served in "Midi's".  It just did not look right to see these huge Ozzie chaps drinking from such a small glass.  My husband and I were greatly amused by this 🤣😂.  I think they may have moved on from that by now?

 

@midora I would say many things wrongly, if I tried to speak in your Japanese language 😬

 

P.S. My husband, who is an analytical chemist, spend many years working in a laboratory.  He says that metric is the only way to go in that environment, but he too prefers to buy a pound of bananas 🍌

I'm of the generation in the UK who were the first to be taught primarily using the metric system for measurement but in everyday life pounds and ounces, miles/mph, inches, feet, yards, acres, furlongs, fathoms, even chains and a whole host of other imperial measurements were still commonly used and, I'm pleased to say, where useful, are still are being used.

 

Metric is for precise and in particular scientific measurements where it is far superior and easier to use than some of the antiquated imperial equivalents.

 

The thing I've hated, and I won't put the blame entirely on our late EU overlords, is the pointless and fatuous replacement of imperial measurements with metric in the media, particularly TV. They'll often talk about km and kmph despite the fact all UK road sign distances and speedometers and even laws relating to vehicles use miles and mph. Incredibly those imperial measurements units are understood even by millennials and post millennials so why they do it has always baffled me.

Cultural identity is an important thing to keep local people together but it also creates borders to others. So IMHO we have to think about what's really important and not just something we are used to.

You would also adjust if the signs would shown km for a period of 40 years.

Is a mile a natural distance between anything? If not then there is no difference to km.

 

Just yesterday there was a message about a new TV from LG. The size is 325 inches. I can not imagine this amount of inches.

 

There are no EU overloards. There is a union of countries which share common values, try to solve issues peacefully, and show solidarity.

There are also EU member states that do not share the values imposed by the EU and where this solidarity falls apart.
The EU places great emphasis on human rights and has completely removed God from its laws.
The EU must understand that human rights end where God's laws begin.
The EU must not force everyone to accept gay and lesbian marriage because it is against God's laws, and there are countries that have not set God aside just to satisfy people's bodily pleasures.

You missed the point that women should stay at home and shouldn't get any education.

 

There are good reasons why most countries removed god from their constitutions and tell religion is something private which is protected.

 

I don't know how the situation is outside of Switzerland but here exist two types of marriage. One by the state and one by the religion. The one by the state is just about that two decide that they share responsibility for each other. The religions can decide if they are accepting mixed couples. My one does and also allows women to be priest. I guess it's the same in other European countries.

 

Still if all countries would share the same basic measurement units then life would be easier. Who cares if there are local additions.

I too have Polish roots, as @ReMake knows 😉.  My father was born in Vilnius (when it was Poland) but is now Lithuania.  I lived with the surname 'Lenkiewicz', until I married, which was a name my friends always found hard to pronounce 🤣  As teased a lot and was called Lenkie for short

 

My father's roots were rather sketchy, as his parents - during the Revolution, were shot in front of him, when he was 6 years old.  He was then taken into care by the Catholic church.  He later was in the Polish Police, then he ended up in the UK and was a navigator during WW2, helping the British air force.  It was in the UK where he met my English Mum, and the rest is history 😄

Here we have both 'Acres' (the area a man and oxen can reasonably plough in a day) and Hectares (derived from the metre - but non S.I.), yet the media insists on measuring area using 'football pitches'?🙃

The comments abut milenials/post-millenials was meant ironically. The usual excuse used by the UK media, the BBC in particular, for using metric distances is because that that group of people don't understand imperial measurements and it confuses the poor little darlings.

 

Patronising poppycock - of course they do; they're not stupid. That was my point.

 

BTW what is somebody whose location is shown as Switzerland doing defending the EU? Switzerland is not in the EU isn't it just in the single market?

 

Its a bit of a compromise position but I'd suspect the reasons why Switzerland are not fully signed up members of the EU are very similar to those that lead the UK to vote for Brexit. They don't want to be subsumed into a bloated European Franco-German dominated super-state either.
