Is it possible to transfer the transparency from one layer to another?

Recommended Posts

I have a shape with gradient transparency and would like to combine it with an existing image on another layer so that the picture gets cut into that shape while keeping the same fading effect. I'm not sure if it's clear what I mean so I have a attached an image of the result I'd like to achieve.

Is this possible in paint.net?

Thanks in advance! :)

If you have my plugin pack installed, yes.

Here's how you'd do it:

  1. Select the gradient layer
  2. Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy that layer to the clipboard
  3. Select the image layer
  4. Effects > Object > Paste Alpha
  5. Use the following settings (only the top 2 settings will probably need to be adjusted):
