The Debate Thread 1.0: MMORPG

Recommended Posts

Well if you think about it, all games are a waste of time. We play games for entertainment purposes. If we do take it casually thats alright, but if you go all out 24/7 hardcore gaming then you could have problems. There was this one kid who played 24/7 and was addicted to Everquest, a World of Warcraft kinda game, that he asked someone to marry him on the game. They said no so he killed himself. If you think about it it's kinda stupid. ((And somewhat funny, I'm evil) :)

I agree fps give your a new challenge every time. It will take a long time for them to get old, and even if it does get old you will still have the satisfaction of owning your enemy with a full clip of ak-47. XD

MMORPG games like Runescape (which i used to play) are very addictive. My group of friends all had accounts and would hang out after school. Thats all we talked about and we basically had a race to gain levels. I was 10/11 at that time and I didnt realise i was sucked in. I advise if you play them STOP NOW.

RPG (non-online roleplayers) games like The Elder Scroll series (morrowind, Oblivion), Diablo.... IMO are better than FPS. I have had Morrowind for four years and have not yet finished. I finished Halo 2 in 2 weeks the first time i got it. A vast majority of the latest RPG's are open-ended, and give you a sense of decision. Whereas in FPS's most of the time there is only ONE way to win and you can only be a GOOD (or BAD) guy. Finally, RPG's gives a more personal feel, you get to (most of the time) create a character and choose there path, instead of every single player being Master Chief out to destroy the Halo's.

I have always preferred RPG to FPS games (maybe because I lack the motor skills and tactical brainpower to play them). I'm not too much of a gamer, but I've played things like Resistance: Fall of Man and Unreal Tournament. They never really gave me the rush of adrenaline it seemed to give my friends (unless I turned on cheats-THAT was interesting). In my opinion, being able to play through a complex, detailed story, customize your character and explore multiple paths to victory has always appealed to me more than the former stated. FPS games, while most have "Campaign" modes and such, are in effect one gigantic shootout. Objectives in its story usually don't consist of more than walking to a destination or getting an item. Thrill-wise, I think that doing quests, gaining levels and having an on-going (and sometimes never-ending) story mode is more fun than blasting heads off with shock rifles.

The only rpg that I absolutely loved was Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. They both had awesome, some of the best, story lines. I would much rather stick with fps though. It is my type of game, you have to think to play them. You don't just go in blasting heads off, well some you do, but besides those games like: Warrock, Call of duty, BF1, 2, and bad company, ETC... You have to outsmart your enemy and chose the right equipment for the right type of maps.

The way I see it, most of the people that play games like WOW probably have little-to-no social status, and they try to gain some sort of reputation in a virtual land where you don't have to see their face, and, unless you have a guild or whatever, hear their voice. I don't know, whenever I hear some people going "dude, my level 63 Frodo totally pwned your level 70 Garden Gnome last night," the first thing that comes to my mind is "Please, get Guitar Hero."

uH please learn to play a real guitar. lol jk I agree with uH but sometimes it can be fun to play those games. unless you play them 24/7, you should learn to balance real life and games. maybe like 1-3 hours playing games and the rest real life. XD

^Now are you saying that digital art to natural drawing is the same thing as video games to sports/etc. That is completely wrong. The world is getting more digital as we speak. How are we to advance if everyone were to quit tinkering in photoshop or paint.net?

About the MMO's. I have had a lot of experience at just honestly being addicted. I use to be one of the hard corest RuneScape player ever. I had a lvl 126; 99 in almost everything. Filthy 'rich' in the game. But everyday I felt less satisfied about what I did the day before, play RuneScape. I'm not saying that video games are pointless, I'm not taking a stab at anyone. But I got pulled into them.

Now if you are an avid MMO player who plays the big games like WOW or RS, how about instead of weaning yourself off because updates will come and you will just completely get 're-addicted', try a new game. I recommend if you want to still play a MMO but one that's not as addicting, try Star Wars: Galaxies. Or Pirates of The Caribbean: Online. SWG is an amazing game for any true SW fan. But PotC is more for the youngsters, but I got a kick out of it the first day.

I do have to make one last statement. All my opinion, but. Runescape > WoW.

Naw, I think you got it wrong.

My amount of use with PDN was ridiculous to a point where I was sitting in my computer the whole day tinkering with PDN so I HAD to stop for a while and learn how to draw because from the start, I only edited my drawings with Paint.NET until it came to a point where everything was PDN! Yes, it was fun but I wanted to take up illustration in college since that is my goal in life.

Well I hope you reach your goal. Are you going to the MCAD?

Hopefully or I'll probably join my sister in america since she's taking up illustration as a master's degree.

Seriously, I think this topic is actually getting somewhere. You can't just go around opening 1.0's and then saying Mods close this, after opening a 1.1 the next day. That is pretty much saying that this is an official thread. IMO, anyways.

It funny how many people can't stop playing WoW. I got it from a friend who wanted me to play with him online. he ran out paid for it and gave it to me just so I would play. So I paid for a year full and only used 6 months of the game. 2 years later I was getting board and paid for 3 months. After 3 months I stop playing again. I can pick it up and drop it with no problems, yet I seen a TV show about some kids who never left there rooms in weeks for any reason, not even to go to the bathroom because they were hooked on the warcrack.

PS: Dave is it me or have people been acting like they got power over mod lately, this is the 2nd one I seen now. Geez does this mean there may be a new rule coming into play ?

Sallah, I said no camels; that's five camels! Can't you count?

I lol every time i read that. lol

Anyway, Most mmorpgs don't have ends. The company that made the game usually just keeps updating the game and adding new features. Thats why people usually play those types of games. Also they set a goal to reach like the top level, such as get to level 2568.9999 and you will be awarded! That is also a reason, because they want to reach that goal and become the best of all.

lol Warcrack. Their have been rising events associated with people that feel like they have the power of the BANHAMMER. lol one word, enrique.
