Paint.net freezes and lags when opening a PDN file

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I created a map (with quite a lot of layers) then saved it and closed my pc for the night. The next day, I tried to open my map (23.1 MB  I have 2 giga bytes available if that’s important) but it keeps lagging and then freezing my pc eventually. It worked (it took around 30 minutes to unfreeze) but it was laggy. I tried moving my map to my D drive, reinstalled paint.net, and tried to do it in another pc, (it didn’t work) but nothing changed. Can you help? (even saving the image takes a good minute or two)

My pc is 64-bits

It loads fine for me, but it has a TON of layers. Total memory usage was almost 16GB.

I'm guessing you have less than 16GB of memory. In order to work with this image without lag you'll need more RAM. At least 16GB, but preferably 32GB. (btw I mean RAM, not hard disk space -- the difference is very important)

In a future version of Paint.NET, I'm planning to significantly reduce the memory requirements for images like this. Most of your layers are mostly empty, unused space (transparent pixels), and Paint.NET doesn't handle that very well yet.
