Reptillian
After a feature request thread, I thought that I would make a simple plugin to solve this problem. So simple, that a caveman can do it. Right now, I made this as a test to see if anyone finds it useful, and if anyone does, I will immediately make it public after a few more edit to source code. No longer needed, I published the code after approval hedre. The purpose of this plugin is to make it easier to manipulate individual channel, and to treat different layers as channel. To combine them, all you need to do is to set them to Addition blending mode. In the case of alpha, you would need to flatten after using addition RGB, then paste Alpha. midora
Works as simple as you described. I guess there are several plugins to reduce a layer to the content of a single channel but they are more complex (like 'Color Matrix' Adjustment Plugin). I would call it 'Channel Editing' maybe Extraction or Reduction.
