harold
Where are we allowed to discuss developing Paint.NET related stuff that is not about plugins? Will all our threads be closed before anyone might accidentally release secrets about Paint.NET? I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. becauseilearn
The source code is available, but there is no support for what you do with it (which makes sense). Rick is working on the next version as well as improving the current one, and I'd see it as a waste of his time to try and also support the things you want to do with the base code. This message board is for the discussion of the work he has done, as well as the plugins that are designed for the software he has written. harold
I'm not talking about Ricks support here But support from others (which is impossible if Rick keeps closing threads like that, which also wastes his time) I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. david.atwell
Source code is released for learning mostly. Giving support here leaves the impression that Paint.NET approves or endorses modifications done to the code. In the past, we have had trouble with a "programmer" releasing an abomination based on the PdN source after having received support on this very forum. We don't want that to happen again. Mike Ryan
Really, I think that Rick may be slowing down on the releasing of the source code with every release. If you think about it, Rick is recieving absolutely no benefit from it... at all. In fact, in some situations it is causing more problems than what it is worth. david.atwell
Plus, Rick has stated categorically that he does not accept unsolicited code. Why, then, would he support it? Rick Brewster
There's no support for the source code at all -- this is spelled out in the readme.txt file that's included there. Honestly because of all the bloody potato I've seen* because of releasing the source code, I'm leaning towards only releasing a plugin SDK for the v4 release. Or at least not releasing the source code for paintdotnet.exe. * Not referring to your posts. I mean like the "backspaceware", rip-off, and fake "4.0 alpha" releases. HITMAN-X-
Is that also why you remove all comments from your code. Rick if you do get rid of the source code with the release of v4 would I be still able to get the old source code for older versions. I started learning C# but it going to take time as I am doing part 2 of Java, along with another Unix class, a math for programming (don't ask), Access, SQL, and the getting ready to start a small business. So with labs, assignments, tests, a job, and a up coming work term, I don't see me getting through 2 - 3 books of C# real fast and it nice to see code that been used and works. Simon Brown
@Hitman: There are always other "open source" C# programs such as #Develop.
HITMAN-X-
@Hitman: There are always other "open source" C# programs such as #Develop. Yes but whats your point ?, don't mean to sound rude but you must know that I am well aware of this and it not the point thats there is other open source programs. It best to try and learn about things you are interested in and things that you like to learn in programming. Paint.NET would be one of the things I like to know inside out. So learning it and the things in it is better then typing in google image editor open source and hopeing to find something just as nice and good. heythere
Please don't get mad at me, but won't some of the community help at least? I got Visual Studio 2008 Professional today really for PDN. I think that if it is for students, etc it shouldn't be so secretive; at least one thread for those building it could ask questions and someone who is willing, help them. Please don't get angry. Sorry. Oh and I have an error with building too, but won't post it so [php-ERROR-79] 01010000 01100001 01101001 01101110 01110100 00101110 01001110 01000101 01010100
harold
There's no support for the source code at all Fairenough, I'm not asking for any That doesn't mean, however, that every PDN-related programming question will be about plugins though (what if I had had to ask a question in order to make that .pdn file reader thingy?) I don't see me getting through 2 - 3 books of C# real fast and it nice to see code that been used and works. If you found any good books on C# I would like to know about them, all I can ever find are "C# for noobs" and "C# for people with an IQ lower than 50" types of books.. Please don't get mad at me, but won't some of the community help at least? Apparently that's illegal now too (look at the locked threads in the plugin dev section and earlier posts in this thread) I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. heythere
@Hitman: There are always other "open source" C# programs such as #Develop. Plus C# is not one of my "Sharp" points. Just PDN is great so I could learn it. And I have been on the forums a while now; and I don't see why I would hurt PDN like those other malicious developers. Source code is released for learning mostly. Giving support here leaves the impression that Paint.NET approves or endorses modifications done to the code.In the past, we have had trouble with a "programmer" releasing an abomination based on the PdN source after having received support on this very forum. And what is "PHP-ERROR" in my top post? 01010000 01100001 01101001 01101110 01110100 00101110 01001110 01000101 01010100

heythere
and I don't see why I would hurt PDN like those other malicious developers. But where do you draw the line? Please explain! Maybe I should start where I want to, then drag the four nubs to curve it. :LineCurveTool: 01010000 01100001 01101001 01101110 01110100 00101110 01001110 01000101 01010100
Andrew D
Either that or Rick could mabye make a group of people who can have access to the source code, of course, people who he can trust.
Rick Brewster
I'm failing to see anything productive in this thread. All I see is complaining and crying, which is just further convincing me that releasing the source code is a bad idea. If you want to learn C#, there are plenty of places on the web to get started. Like search engines and forums. If you want to make plugins for Paint.NET, then you know where to go. If you want to learn all about the source code for Paint.NET, then go download it and dive in. Just because it's provided for "educational purposes" does not mean that a teacher is provided along with the download. I am not your teacher or your mentor, I did not sign a support contract or promise to hold your hand.
