while the outer ring appears to be more sky-bluish when observers move away from the image.

"Chromatic negative afterimage"
Fix your eyes on either of the fixation points (crosses) for several seconds.

Then, move your eyes to the other fixation point, and chromatic negative afterimages appear.

Which_Way_Is_It_Spinning.png

"Which Way Is It Spinning?"
Here’s another amazing example of still-image illusory motion.
Is the image rotating to the left or right for you? Can you reverse the direction.

Focus on the details, look closely at the black and white edges of the orange circles.

It’s tough, but keep trying! The black half-border around the orange circles seem to ‘pull’ to the right.

The white half-border encourages this effect.

Concentrate on the center point of the circle and you will see that it starts moving as well as expanding.

Actually it the lines are the same and are not moving. This is just an illusion to your eyes.

"Mailbox"
The apparent orientation of a mailbox is changed facing either of  the following four directions: top-right, top-left,

134.gif

Close your left eye and just focus your right eye on the tiny static circle on the left of the screen.

At some point the big circle will disappear as it crosses your ‘blind spot‘. If you can’t see this effect,

it means you’re sitting too close/far from your monitor.

Try sitting closer/further to the screen and repeat the test.

So, have you managed to find your blind spot?

AmbiguousCubes.png

"Ambiguous cubes"
Two ways of perception alternate (cubes seen from

outside versus cubes seen from inside).

Each appearance may also look impossible,

but actually both are possible with the help of perceptual transparency.

Seeing your latest image Seerose reminds me of this:

6dbHDuA.png

It is the frame for a cabinet I made, a long time ago, to hold my Vista computer and printer - adapted a bit with MS paint (pixel by pixel).
I didn't even have an internet connection at that point and it was while before I downloaded Pdn.

I'm enjoying all the example optical illusions you have shown us!:)

*Greenpoint
Stare at the blinking green dot for a few seconds, and see what happens to the yellow dots...

Hard to believe but the yellow dots never actually disappear.

Still images are quick to fall from our awareness, especially when they’re surrounded by constantly changing imagery.

Thanks for feeding this thread. I always look at your post and enjoy them a lot.:trophy-silver:

By the way, if you need a carpenter I am available. :D

^

Actually, as you can probably see, I routed around the edges to allow for plywood shelves... unfortunately I had forgotten about the screws that I had counter bored and covered with dowels! ... I tend to design things as I'm going along :).

These squares are actually the same exact color.

Hold your finger over the boundary between the two shapes and see them change.

snake.png

*Snakes
Do not trust your eyes! Although the white and black snakes seem to have red eyes and tongues,

those of the white snakes are actually gray.

And although the eyes and tongues of the black snakes are larger, they are actually the same size as the white ones.

*Right Down The Middle
A perfect part lines up with a field’s path.

marsmars.png

*MARS
Stare at the white dot in the centre of the red circle. Always try to keep focused on the white dot.
Soon after staring, you’ll start to see a thin rim of light around the edge.

Wait another minute – keeping your head perfectly still.
Next, slowly move your head backwards, keeping your eyes focused on the dot at all times.

The circle’s rim will glow brilliantly with true Cyan.

Keep on moving your head slowly backwards, and witness the Eclipse of Mars.

shake.png

*Shake your head illusion
Here's an illusion that's sure to give you a headache.

Try staring at the vertical lines while shaking your head from side to side - you should see something interesting.

Looking.png

*This is an interesting looking optical illusion of what appears to be a rolled up coil.

If you cast your eyes over this image you should be able to see the coil expanding.

For best results I recommend you move your eyes over it from one corner to the other and

it will give you the illusion that the coil is inflating.

If you stare at this image of a black light bulb for about 30 seconds and

then look at something white, you will be able to see the bulb glowing.

car.png

*Sideways car illusion
This well circulated picture of a vintage car might seem like nothing unusual at a

glance but look a bit closer and you'll notice that the direction its facing isn't quite as

obvious as it first appears.

The addition of the spare wheel works well to make the image even more confusing -

is the car facing towards you or away from you?
