How to Improve This Old, Damaged Photo?

Recommended Posts

The attached photo is in really bad shape and I have not used Paint.Net very much. All I knew to try was remove the background and then try to add pieces of either skin or clothing in "layers" to try and match the missing or damaged skin or clothing colors (and to cover up some that is in terrible condition). The end result was that the pieces of skin and clothing that I tried to add were the appropriate colors, but the photo looked like an old photo with blocks of color added on top of the photo, not at all blended into the photo.

Is there a basic tutorial that would show me how to do what should be done, or at least get me started in the right direction?
