ash73
Paint.net v4.2.13 non-app version When I save a jpg to the desktop it saves the file but also leaves behind an empty .0.pdnSave file. When I try to delete it is says could not find this item, but the icon is there. It disappears when I reboot, or after a while (maybe when I close some programs). BoltBait
Does it disappear when you right click on the desktop and choose refresh? ash73
Hmm, still doing it. And no other programs are doing it. But now I know about clicking refresh it doesn't really matter. Thanks for a great bit of software, I use it all the time.
Rhonda
Mine has been doing that for the last few months too. It always goes away but now I know to right click on desktop and hit refresh to make it go away faster. Thanks! @BoltBait Edited July 13, 2021 by Rhonda
Enk
FYI, the same happened to me today, for the first time ever (I've been saving paint.net pics for years onto my desktop, but the pdn thing never happened to me before. Refresh resolved it for me as well. I seem to recall that by mistake I clicked PNG in the dropdown, instead of JPG. So i then clicked JPG to correct my typo. But that's a far-fetched cause, so i guess it's one of life's mysteries.
Rick Brewster
@Enk, are you on Windows 7 by any chance? Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
Enk
Nope, Edition Windows 10 Home Version 21H1 Installed on 12/8/2020 OS build 19043.1348 Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0 (but still was on paint.net 4.3.2. So sorry, didn't have time to update yet). Rick Brewster
Ahh, I ask because I did see this happen recently when testing some stuff in a Win7 VM. It just seems to be a bug in Explorer. PDN does everything it can to make these phantom files (they don't exist!) not show up for you, but Explorer doesn't seem to always get the message. (for the record, PDN calls SHChangeNotify(SHCNE_UPDATEITEM, SH_PATHW, ...) which is supposed to prevent this) Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

tft
This problem is still happening with 4.3.10 on Windows-10 Pro (OS-build 19043.1706). If I open the application and create a file and save it off, all is fine but if I open an existing PNG file and store it elsewhere (say the desktop) with a different name, the phantom 0-byte .pdnSave file is created. Let me know if any debug info is needed or if you need me to share any further details.

Noted, but why is it appearing on certain functions/functionality (and not others) and on certain versions of the app and not others. Alas, food for thought. Thanks and keep up the GREAT work on the application (much beloved and appreciated !!).
Rick Brewster
Well the code for this hasn't changed in Paint.NET. And, I'm pretty sure it happens with all versions of the app, but depends on some environmental factor that we haven't nailed down. I've already sunk a lot of time trying to nail this down, and it's just an OS bug and there's probably nothing more to be done at this point.
