My paint.net is using my webcam?!! I assume my cat did this (she occasionally gets on my keyboard), how do I turn it off?

As the title says, how do I turn off whatever paint.net is doing with my webcam? I closed the file and reopened it, and there is still a webcam window open in the bottom corner showing myself live. This has nothing to do with the image, but I can't find any function to use or turn off the webcam. How do I turn it off?

This sounds like there is some other application that is interfering with Paint.NET.

The webcam is probably controlled by a keyboard combination, perhaps one of the function keys.

The small increase in performance you get coding in C++ over C# is hardly enough to offset the headache of coding in the C++ language. ~BoltBait

Webcams often make themselves available for image acquisition via WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition, part of the OS).

When you open the File menu, Paint.NET pings WIA to see if any acquisition devices are available -- usually scanners, but also cameras, or even your phone if it's plugged in. Then, the Acquire -> From Scanner or Camera menu item is enabled/disabled as appropriate.

So, maybe that's what's happening? Paint.NET has no code in it to directly use your webcam. I haven't seen Windows report Paint.NET as actually using the camera, but I'm not sure how yours is set up for interacting with Windows and/or WIA.

Also, regardless of what's happening, you can configure your camera privacy settings on a system-wide and per-app basis in the Windows Settings:

1362239197_stinkinwebcam.png.92df6b8c71ccb28320c06d2ec97c64d2.pngThis is so weird and frustrating. I tried denying access to paint.net but it wasn't in the list of apps that can be denied. I chose to deny all apps, and then when I quit and restarted paint.net it doesn't show the webcam image in the corner but it shows the symbol that was under it that alternates between a reload symbol and a pause symbol, and then when I reenable the camera in settings, it reappears in the corner. I guess it doesn't really affect my use of the program, I'm just using it as a cross stitch pattern so I don't care if there is a random image in the corner, but it's just so offputting to have my camera perpetually watching me, the little light is on, etc. Guess I'll be using the masking tape solution.
