How to Finish a shape

I'm new to Paint and can't figure out how to lock or Finish a shape.  I use the Tool menu to bring a rectangle into the work area.  The rectangle has a moving dashes around the

perimeter

.  When I press the Enter key, or any other key or mouse buttons, the rectangle goes away.  What should I be doing to retain the shape?   I using version 4.2.11 and win 10.

Make sure you're using the correct tool.
