An image with transparent background, two copies pasted from paint.net to MS Word a minute apart, one copy has proper transparency (page background visible), one is filled with white. I believe there's a trick to control transparency, but what is it exactly? I didn't use any tools beside the conventional Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V, and definitely didn't fiddle with image format in MS Word after pasting it. Also, you didn't specify which version of Word you're using ... make sure you're using the latest.
