[Feature request] ARM64 builds

Recommended Posts

I don't own a ARM64 Windows 10 device yet, but if I ever got one I'd be very glad if Paint.NET could run natively on it.

  • Would it be possible to compile Paint.NET to ARM64 without too much hassle for you developers?

Maybe release it in Microsoft Store only. I've already payed for the store version and I love it. I very much like auto updates + supporting the Paint.NET developers at the same time.

I would not dare speak for Rick Brewster, and I have never heard of ARM64, and looking through Microsoft's website, I am not sure if Rick will be willing to expend energy rewriting codes for PDN to run on ARM64.

For one thing, I found a blog post written back in 2018 that suggests apps need to be running with C++ codes.

Paint.NET cannot be compiled for ARM64 right now because Microsoft's Visual C++ compiler does not support compiling C++/CLI for it. Hopefully someday but I wouldn't get your hopes up. It's out of my control. Until then you have to use the 32-bit x86 version, which will run emulated (and yes you can get it from the Store!). I'm told it runs well.
