n d
Hello all. I thought the time is ripe for me to introduce myself, because everyone is probably wondering who I am. I was just out barbecuing today. My neighbours, who are a couple of 40-50 year old alcoholists, invited me & my girlfriend out for a barbecue. So we went to the local grocery store and bought some pork and sausages, and some long drinks (do they sell long drinks in cans anywhere else? I'm not sure, maybe it's a local thing...) anyway, it was fun, the woods were all soaked so it took us 1.5 hours to get the damn fire going, but it was worth it because the steaks were awesome. Although now my clothes smell like smoke. So yeah, I'm a bit drunk now, but not all that much so don't let it bother you. Anyway, I'm a 28 year old guy from Finland. I've always been an artistic soul. I originally got into working with paint.net because my old computer was really slow and gimp would run really slow on it. Paint.net was faster. Now I just bought a better computer, but I've gotten so used to paint.net that I'm going to keep using it at least as long as they keep supporting XP. After that, who knows, I'm not too keen on installing vista/windows 7... I just got into coding again, started learning C# a few days ago and have written a couple somewhat useful plugins already. You can find them if you roam the forums a bit. What else is there to say?
Frontcannon
Now THAT is an introduction! Hyvää iltaa? n d
I have NO idea how to pronounce finnish words o_o Luckily you won't have to, since our electronized communication is based purely on abstractions of the written word - any pronounciation will be happening in the reader's mind. The spelling was 100% correct though. Here's a gold star for you- ...and a good evening to you as well
Frontcannon
Good thing I have a small Finnish dictionary at hand The absolute unconditional LOVE your language has for umlauts and whatnots is incredible, though. Also you have aa huge amount of cases (14?? German needs only 4). A fun thing I noticed while browsing through the dictionary is how everything with -ko / -kö can become a question. Pyörä irtosi autosta. PyöräKÖ irtosi autosta? IrtosiKO pyörä autosta? AutostaKO pyörä irtosi? I read that three times. Must make no mistake > Quote Night Vision Text Effect Tutorial Gallery reddit.com/r/futurebeats | My Mixcloud
Kemaru
Finnish is hard to learn, and even native speakers get confused with inflection sometimes. Turkish has an even more complex structure, you can form a legitimate sentence just by adding affixes to a single word. Tervetuloa, n d! Frontcannon
???? Googling that did NOT help. I suppose it's some word made up of other words, in German you can form endless chains like that, for example "Zirkuskaninchenfanggesellschaftsvorsitzender". But that got me reading about Finland and Scandinavia in general. The weather seems to be too cold, the winters long and dark, the summers have few beautiful days. Finnish supermarkets seem to suck. Canned stuff of all kinds? Here you go. Fresh vegetables and fruits? Hahahahaaa, never ever! the most interesting thing about nordic culture seems to be Janteloven or Janten laki for the finnish. A pretty stupid social 'law' if you ask me Quote Night Vision Text Effect Tutorial Gallery reddit.com/r/futurebeats | My Mixcloud

Frontcannon
It's.. a Scandinavian thing. Edited August 15, 2010 by Frontcannon Quote Night Vision Text Effect Tutorial Gallery reddit.com/r/futurebeats | My Mixcloud
n d
Well I've never heard of "Janteloven" or "Janten laki" or w/e... must have been before my time... As for this - But that got me reading about Finland and Scandinavia in general. The weather seems to be too cold, the winters long and dark, the summers have few beautiful days.Finnish supermarkets seem to suck. Canned stuff of all kinds? Here you go. Fresh vegetables and fruits? Hahahahaaa, never ever! Hmm, I wonder where you're getting that because that's pretty much almost all wrong. Yes our winters are dark, and there's a couple months that are properly cold. But our summers are long and hot - for example this summer it has been 30C and up for 2 months straight... this heat is killing me, really... Finnish supermarkets do suck but for different reasons - the reasons why all supermarkets suck (they take away the business from small local shops and bring more money to big corporations) - but I don't know where you get that you couldn't find fresh vegetables and fruits here... Well, if you mean fruits that have to be shipped from some 3rd world countries then yeah, they may or may not be at optimal freshness, but I have absolutely no trouble finding fresh veggies or any european fruits. Oh well, at least people don't still think we all live in igloos... polar bears walking the streets and all that... edit: oh yeah, I read up on Jante's law... as I suspected it's an older generation thing. That kind of behaviour was still really common in the 80:s or so but nowdays it's the opposite really, except maybe in some small inbred towns... which I don't want to visit anyway Edited August 15, 2010 by n d
Frontcannon
Oh, some of it was from another forum where Scandinavians were asked why the nordic countries were always portrayed so positively and if there's anything about Scandinavia that does indeed suck, can't prove if true or not. Still an interesting read Quote Night Vision Text Effect Tutorial Gallery reddit.com/r/futurebeats | My Mixcloud
Sarkut
nd, you're from Finland and your English usage on the forum posts is pretty flawless. Would I be mistaken to think of English as being a second language for you?
n d
nd, you're from Finland and your English usage on the forum posts is pretty flawless. Would I be mistaken to think of English as being a second language for you? Well, define "second language"... it's not like it was taught to me by my parents, but in today's world it's quite hard not to learn any english, unless you've been living in a barrel 100 meters underwater - or in France (jk, don't take offense french people...) Anyway, I might say I've learned my english here and there. I've done some travelling, and then of course there's TV, teh interwebs, movies, music... in a 100 years or so, english could very well be an universal language. Or who knows, maybe it's Lojban... Sarkut
Yeah, the English language is becoming fairly ubiquitous. I'm lucky to have learned it as my native tongue, my ability to learn other languages is limited.
