'uncurl' an image

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know a plugin that will allow me to 'uncurl' an image?

I have a photocopy of a page of music (see link below) and would like to straighten it so it is more readable. Any ideas how this could be done? I have used some of the 'Distort' plugins such as TechnoRobbo's 'Distort this!', MadJik's 'Oblique',  and dpy's 'Perspective' without much luck. Have also tried pyrochild's 'Grid Warp' which was quite good but too sensitive.

If there is a plug in that might work, I'd love to hear about it!

Kind Regards

Charles

Hello @deselrahc and Welcome to the forum :)

I doubt it is possible to un-bend as the lines will become somewhat distorted.

I think you would be better off making it yourself in Paint.net.  You can draw the lines with the line/curve tool and you can make the notes found in @lynxster4's Plugin pack found here.   I would keep the lines on one layer and then add the musical notes accordingly on new layers, before you flatten.

@xod If that was done automatically, then my mind is blown. By the way, that software is open-sourced. As unlikely as it can be, it can be converted into another code even though converting a program entirely from scratch to a filter used by another software is literally hundreds of hours of work. In some cases, years of works or decades.

Thnx @Pixey I will give that a try! I hadn't thought of doing it that way... I was so focussed on doing it 'my way' that I hadn't explored regenerating the image, so your suggestion was very helpful! I think for simple musical notation images this would be ideal!

Cheers

You can use the free ScanTailor software that has a Dewarping function and also a light equalization function.

@xod... that is just AMAZING!!!! This must the the program I have been waiting for, especially for musical notation images that are very complex (but badly distorted). I have downloaded the program and will give it a go when I get home!!! Thnx Thnx Thnx!

I must admit I'd be tempted to go @Pixey's route.

Grid Warp can technically do it ... this took 5 minutes with a grid size of grid-ex.png and zoomed in .

It could be fine tuned again by reopening Grid Warp and changing the Grid Size.

I guess it's a case of how finessed you want it, how much you want it ... and how much soul you've got left to destroy ...

This made me realise a mouse and keyboard function combined, would be great in Grid Warp.  Then you could get it pretty much spot on.

Cut it into segments and Tube Oblique doesn't do a bad job.  Loses a lot of quality tho'

Thnx @welshblue... I really liked @pyrochild 'Grid Warp' plugin, but it was very fiddly even with small grid sizes (though I didn't get down to 20x20)! As you say, with mouse and keyboard support (esp. up, down, left, right arrows) I think it would be even easier! It would also be good if the plugin allowed movement in only one direction, that is, vertically or horizontally so that I could 'uncurl' in one direction only. Don't want to destroy my soul at all if possible!! 😁
