Creating dragon scales – but how?

Recommended Posts

You can do almost everything with Paint.net! But can you make a dragon-like skin as well? If that’s possible; please, make a tutorial how you do that. It’d be very nice.

Hi @Woodwalker!

Have you tried any of the Texture tutorials? I didn't see anything that looked like Dragon Scales but you might try these two for Dragon skin.

Snake/ Dragon - there's so many different types on google images  ... I like the scalloped look and pretty easy to make  Splinter/ Texture Shader and Tile Reflection

... using Tile image on that texture gives interesting results

There's also the option of drawing something Like This   and it's easy to turn it into the image below

Thanks @Eli ... all down to the vector linked to and Texture Shader 😀

I wanna do it by myself.

I was just using that as an example - if you want to put in the extra work and make a similar pattern the steps are - Black drawing on a  white background - Splinter at Normal - 16 splinters - Texture Shader with a texture of your choice copied to clipboard and play with directional lighting.

I can't think of a way to automate the drawing process off the top of my head.  Possibly Halftone for the smaller bits ?

Personally as a big believer in wanting to make things 100% PDN myself ... sometimes a better/ quicker solution is out there.

Your project = Your choice 😉

Something without digital drawing?

It may be best if you link to an example texture, seeing as there's so many variants out there - that way one of the talented people there are here, may be able to help more

But you've got to tip the scales in their favour (pun intended ...)

Hexagonal Grid rotated 90 degrees gives a sort of scaley look hexa-scale.png

Totally irrelevant but preparation is always key to the best finish.  Of the time taken to respray part of a car only about 10%  is applying the paint ... the rest is spent making sure the best outcome is achieved ... weird analogy but it's true of digital art too

There is only one colour for a dragon - RED 😉 flag-for-wales-1f3f4-e0067-e0062-e0077-e

You called?

In all seriousness, for the dragon in my sig I used a scale texture brush in Brush Factory, then played around with @MJW's height map plugins until I got something akin to what I wanted. However, this didn't result in quite as much scale detail as OP seems to need.

Putting a leather texture above it and doing a nice smoothy shadow.

You could try this ?

Spoiler

Starting Image

starting-image.jpg

Make B & W

Blurs >>> Splinter

starting-2.jpg

Texture Used >>> Copied to Clipboard

texture.jpg

Effects >>> Height Map >>> Texture Shader >>> Choose Clipboard option >>> Play with Directional Lighting

finished-texture.jpg

... could have done with the Texture Height Scale tweaked slightly and maybe better lighting control but the jist is there

But the light seems a little bit unrealistic, in my opinion.

Bear in mind - these are just pointers.  Without being inside your head (believe me, you don't want that) I/ we don't know what textures/ lighting you want to use etc

The final result is down to you playing with controls etc.

We can only do so much in giving advice

- on the other hand my hourly rate for graphic design is £xxx or a percentage of gross sales - if I think the risk is worth it 😉

FWIW ... I personally think the choice of scalloped scutes are too 'regular'.  If you want to go that route have a more irregular pattern, that way you'll get a better textured look

Unrealistic?  On dragon scales?

16 hours later - I've finally got what you meant

Thanks for shattering the  dream of me ever getting one as a pet ... so St George never slayed one ? 😋
