Paint.net keeps crashing. Very new hardware.

Hi. I keep getting crashes using paint.net. PS along others work just fine  but I prefer your lightweight program for my work.

 

I have tried turning hardware acceleration off, several different graphics drivers and reinstalled the program (and even fresh installs of different versions of windows but I keep getting the same crashes.

 

Please see the crashlog if you can help me with my problems.

I would look at disabling anything that does something related to video or GPU, or that does anything "within" other software. Screenshot/clipping software, overclocking software, GPU monitoring software, or even (as a last resort) security software (Diebold Warsaw is the worst offender ever here -- it's called "security software" but it's legitimately spyware.)

 

Also, it looks like you've got hardware acceleration disabled within the app, so be sure to try enabling that.

I tried re-enabling hardware acceleration but no difference.

I have (again) installed a fresh copy (original ISO) of Windows 10 x64 ver. 1809.

Nothing else installed at all but Nvidia-drivers. Tried then with the chipset-drivers and NVMe-drivers too but still no difference.

Only Windows Defender running as security software.

 

Paint.NET keeps crashing after 1-30 seconds everytime.

 

Feels like I really tried everything. Some incompatibly issue with my hardware?

2080Ti too new? There seem to be some direct2d(?) issues within the crash logs but this is not my area...

Or could it be my Samsung 970 Evo M.2 SSD? I have used Paint.NET before on this same setup but with a 980Ti and no M.2 SSD. Worked fine then.

 

Worth saying is that I experience no problems with other apps whatsoever, or artifacts or faults with my GPU.

 

Would be very grateful for further looking into the problem because I'd love to use your software..

Sorry for nagging you but I again I tried reinstalling latest windows (1903 fully untouched ISO) and the brand newest NVIDIA-drivers 430.86.

paint.net crashes immedieatly after start of program or after max 30 seconds.

I don't know what's causing this problem, and I don't have any way to recreate it. I'm sorry, but we're at an impasse.

 

I can keep asking questions but they're all just guesses with the hope of finding something that'll stick out: what kind of monitor(s) do you have? What are their DPI settings? Do you have any special power management stuff set up? ANY other software installed? Did you make any changes in the NVIDIA control panel? Any kind of system configuration "tweaks" or "tweak software"? Did you disable anything in Windows? etc. etc.

Hi again. Just wanted to update you that the error lied within either .NET framework or NVIDIA drivers and not with your software.

Everything works perfect now and I am very thankful for your lightweight free-to-use software.

Wish I could tell you.


What I can tell you is that I still have the exact same setup. 6 months ago I could reproduce the problem every time with a clean install of Windows 10 1809 and 1903 with only graphic drivers installed (also tried with and without chipset drivers). Today it works on a clean install of Windows 1909 with latest Nvidia-drivers only. Did not test your software for the last few months so I cannot pinpoint it more than that.

I did try several monitors with different types of cables and several different types of SSD-drives. RAM works perfectly fine.
All Windows-dists were Microsofts own untouched ISO's.

 

So I guess it comes down to just Windows 10 updates and Nvidia-drivers. Everything that happened in their updates last 6 months :)
But yeah, only that. Otherwise no difference at all. No bios updates or other firmwares etc.

 

And yeah, also tried the paint.net version from back then. That's why I know it wasn't your software.

I tried with 2 monitors and with my TV. My recent one is 27" 1440p and the other two was 1080p 24" and 42".
If that means different DPI-scaling I have no idea but the crashes were always there on these three at least.

 

When I think of it I also tried to take out my 2080Ti and run on the integrated 6700k graphics. Also did a fresh windows install like this so no nvidia-drivers could be there to disturb. I still had the crashes which means it should come down to Windows and updates only, not Nvidia-related.

 

I had one more software crashing on me except paint.net. uPlay launcher (Ubisofts gaming platform) always crashed a couple of seconds in when the application window was "rendering" if you understand what I mean. Like the application started but the content inside the window could not be shown. That also said something about "directdraw".
I was in contact with ubisoft support but they had no idea what the error could be. This was also fixed with some kind of update with windows, the same that made paint.net work for me again. I am not 100% sure but I think it was related to some .NET framework update.
