📢⚠⚠⚠ REMINDER: Please upgrade to Win10 and 64-bit. Win7/8.1 and 32-bit/x86 support being removed

Recommended Posts

Update, 2021-11-21:

Paint.NET v4.3.x is the last version that will work for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or any 32-bit x86 version of Windows.

Paint.NET v5.0 will require Windows 10 or newer (including Windows 11), and will be 64-bit only (x64 and ARM64).

This means no more updates, especially security updates. This will put it in the same place as XP and Vista, which nobody should be using anymore.

I don't yet have a concrete plan for when Paint.NET will stop supporting Windows 7, which is when Windows 10 will become the minimum OS version*, but the clock is ticking. Maybe 1 year after, maybe 2 or even 3, it's not set in stone yet, but I'm not going to be able to support Windows 7 indefinitely.

Please upgrade to Windows 10. I know a lot of you really like Windows 7, and that's a perfectly fine opinion, but supporting it does hold back Paint.NET's long-term progression and you have to know I can't support it indefinitely. Windows 7 has had a great run! It's currently 10 years old! Celebrate that, and then upgrade to 10 :) You've got time, so don't panic, but definitely include this in your planning.

* let's just forget Windows 8/8.1 ever happened, just like we never say the word "Vista" out loud ...

BTW, this transition has already begun...

Starting with Paint.NET v4.2, Windows 10 will be required for HEIF/HEIC file support.

I haven't tested this, but Windows 10 seems to still be a free upgrade for Win7 holdouts: https://wccftech.com/how-to/upgrade-windows-7-download-windows-10-free/

NOTE: If you're using Windows 7 with an AMD Ryzen CPU, Paint.NET may randomly crash at startup. (It may also crash at other times, I can't say for sure)

This is an unsupported combination: Win7 is out of support, and AMD has never supported Ryzen on Win7 (they don't supply drivers for it).

Unfortunately I cannot fix this. If you're experience trouble with Win7 + Ryzen, you will simply need to upgrade to Windows 10.

(This seems to affect ALL generations of Ryzen, old 1000 series and even brand new 5000s)

I'm currently finalizing my plans for ending support for Windows 7. It probably won't be much longer, maybe end-of-year at the latest.

If you're still on Windows 7, upgrade now. You've had plenty of time to do so.
